It's the same conversation over and over at the moment. School pick-up, a coffee, a text at 9pm. Friends in finance, in law, in professional services — applications going out and hardly anything coming back.

So here's what I'd tell you if we were having coffee.

They look you up. Before your CV is opened, before anyone's read a word you wrote, they've found you online and made a call about you in a second flat. And most of us are sitting there with a photo cropped out of someone's wedding.

You don't need to look like a different person. You need to look like you on a good day. Like someone who'd be easy to work with and can clearly do the job.

Nobody puts off a headshot because they don't need one.

They put it off because there's never a good week for it. Or because they don't know what they'd wear, or what actually happens on the day. Or because the last time someone photographed them professionally, the result looked polished and successful and not much like them.

All three are fair. All three are my job to solve, not yours.

It's why I've built the Modern Headshot Event the way I have. Saturday 5 September, five sessions, one day. Professional hair and makeup, up to four looks, and enough time in each session that nothing feels rushed. Two fully retouched images included, and the rest sit in a gallery you can add from whenever you need something.

Six years is a long time between photographs. And here's the thing about a good headshot — it works so well for so long that you stop noticing when it stops being accurate. Every person who looked her up before a meeting was meeting a version of her from six years ago. Not because she'd been slack about it. Because photos don't expire with a warning.

So we started again, and we went in the opposite direction to last time. The 2020 session was polished and glamorous and I still love it. This one is soft. Barely-there makeup, natural light, a bit of it shot outdoors. Just Monique, looking like Monique.

Celebrating a first birthday down at Balmoral.

At this family's request, we kept things candid and face-free on our socials — sometimes tiny feet and held hands tell just as sweet a story, and trusting the process means the real moments come through.

A lovely detail: this session started as a new-baby gift from mum's colleagues at work. Life got busy with a newborn, so she used it to mark his first birthday instead — no pressure, just flexibility to use it when the time was right.

Ageless Over 40 has a new name. It's now the Modern Headshot Event — same studio, same photographer, just open to everyone. Enough men asked that it started to feel silly saying no.

There's a particular window with teenagers — somewhere between being little kids and being fully grown — where they're figuring out who they are, in front of you, in real time. One is suddenly eye-level with Dad. The other still tucks in close without thinking about it. Give it another year and it'll all look different again.

This is the part of family photography I love most: not posing everyone into a stiff group shot, but catching how they actually are with each other — who laughs first, who leans on who, what "relaxed" looks like for each of them.
