I thought I’d share a few images from Laikipia that aren’t the famous Black Leopard, just to show how much incredible wildlife fills this part of Kenya. From elephants drifting quietly through the bush to a pair of Grevy’s zebras casually crossing the road — which, yes, technically makes it a genuine “zebra crossing” — the place never stops delivering moments that make you smile. Add in the striking African Hoopoe, the shimmering Marico Sunbird, the electric blues of the Vulturine Guineafowl, and the sharp, watchful Eastern Chanting-Goshawk, and you’ve got a pretty spectacular line‑up. Even with all this variety, the spotlight always seems to swing back to the leopards — and one very special one in particular — but Laikipia has so much more going on if you pause and take it all in.

I’ll try to make this the final post from The Africa Safari Co.’s Black Leopard Safari… but honestly, no promises. I’ve come home with an unbelievable number of photos of this remarkable cat, and I’m still buzzing from how well the entire safari unfolded. The group was an absolute pleasure to es**rt — enthusiastic, patient, funny and thrilled with both their images and the overall experience, which makes the whole journey even more rewarding.

Some of these shots were taken on our very last morning, squeezed into a quick two‑hour game drive before our flight back to Nairobi. As if scripted, Giza was already moving through the camp grounds, and it took barely two minutes after rolling out of camp to find her. To have a final farewell like that — calm, close, and completely unhurried — felt incredibly special. It’s moments like these that stay with you long after the dust settles.

The game drives at Laikipia Wilderness Camp in Kenya were all about finding leopards, and it truly delivered. In my view, it’s one of the best places in Kenya for reliable, high‑quality leopard sightings. Over just three days we recorded nine different individuals — males, females, cubs, and of course Giza, the famous black leopard.

These photos show one of the resident females with her young cub early one morning. We were incredibly fortunate to be the only vehicle on site, giving us uninterrupted time to watch the two of them interact. Moments like this — quiet, intimate, and completely unfiltered — are what make Laikipia such a special place to photograph wildlife.

This is exactly why we’re here in Laikipia, Kenya with The Africa Safari Co. — to witness and photograph the legendary Black Leopard. Giza, as she’s known, is a rare melanistic female African leopard whose striking dark coat comes from a recessive genetic mutation that triggers an overproduction of melanin. In the right light you can still make out her rosettes, but in the shadows she melts away completely, using that natural camouflage to her advantage. It’s hard to put into words the buzz of seeing such an extraordinary animal in her natural environment; an experience that’s nothing short of incredible.

While exploring the Maasai Mara in Kenya on our Black Leopard Safari, we found ourselves surrounded by Lions — they seemed to be everywhere we turned. The Mara is famous for its big cat density, but this trip really showcased just how dominant Lions are across the landscape. From relaxed prides lazing in the morning sun to youngsters practising their stalking skills, every encounter offered something different.

These five images are just a small sample of the Lions we spent time with during the safari. Whether they were stretched out in the grasslands, perched on termite mounds, or watching the herds move across the plains, they were an unforgettable part of the experience.

A few more frames from our Black Leopard Safari in the Maasai Mara with The Africa Safari Co., showing some of the general wildlife we enjoyed along the way. The Mara always delivers a mix of classic sightings — from grazing herbivores to the ever‑alert predators — and every game drive brings something different as you move through the grasslands, river lines, and acacia country.

And of course, some of the wildest creatures out there were the participants in the safari vehicle. Between the excitement, the laughter, and the constant scanning of the horizon, they were every bit as entertaining as the animals we were photographing (thanks guys).

This one’s for the birders. While exploring the Maasai Mara in Kenya, we came across a brilliant mix of birdlife as we moved between sightings of the big game. That’s one of the real joys of an African safari — even when the lions, elephants, or cheetahs aren’t in view, the bush is never quiet. There’s always movement in the trees, flashes of colour along the riverbanks, and calls drifting across the plains.

These five birds were photographed while we were out searching for the larger wildlife, proving once again that keeping an eye out for the smaller, feathered residents can turn any game drive into something special. Birds add a whole extra layer of interest to the experience, and in places like the Mara, you’re rewarded the moment you start looking.

My next few posts will dive into the highlights of the recent Black Leopard Safari in Kenya, which I hosted from 21–31 March 2026. We began with four unforgettable nights in the Maasai Mara before heading up to Laikipia for the final three nights on safari — a journey organised by The Africa Safari Co., whose expertise and local knowledge helped shape an incredible experience from start to finish.

Very early in the Mara, we were treated to one of the most dramatic and educational sightings you can witness in the wild: a Cheetah hunting, catching, and then losing its hard‑earned meal to a clan of Hyenas. It’s a powerful reminder of just how tough life is for Cheetahs, despite their reputation as the fastest land mammals on earth. Built for speed rather than strength, they rely on explosive acceleration and precision rather than brute force. That incredible speed comes at a cost — a lightweight frame, limited stamina, and very little ability to defend a kill once larger predators or scavengers arrive.

Because of this, Cheetahs often try to eat as quickly as possible after a successful hunt, still panting from the chase while scanning the plains for approaching threats. Even a minor injury can be life‑changing, as anything that slows them down can prevent them from hunting effectively. This is why they rarely, if ever, challenge Hyenas, Lions, or even large vultures. Survival depends on avoiding unnecessary risks.

Watching the entire sequence unfold — the stalk, the burst of speed, the takedown, and the inevitable loss — offered a raw and honest look into the daily challenges these cats face. My attached images try to show the full story, capturing both the beauty and the harsh reality of life on the African plains.

WARNING: Some images may be considered gruesome.

Thanks to our guide Julius (J's Karia) who did a fantastic job in tracking and positioning.
