I generally like to take a few frames at 30sec & a high ISO (10000) just for previewing purposes, and did so while in the process of setting up for my first 24mm widefield session with the R6 on the new harmonic drive mount (wav100i) for the night. Ignore the noise, drift and other optical tech issues; it's a preview shot.
Managed to capture high in the sky the Large Magellanic Cloud, an irregular galaxy that is the apparent largest & easily seen galaxy with the naked eye (just looks like a cloud), and houses a super nebula, the great Tarantula nebula (the green dot near the bottom of the cloud).
Below is what folks generally call the Milky Way; this is actually just parts of two galactic arms extending out from the Milky Way. The Sagittarius/Carina arm, housing the great Carina nebula (brightest area), which is sitting behind a sparse section of the Orion Spur (the arm where our solar system lives) and where we see our neighbours on Acrux and Delta Centauri of the Southern Cross (just above the tree), and a couple of photobombing satellites, but on cue, it was pack up time for the rain after this shot.
Sure I can annotate the pic, but it's fun to talk about too.
So I've yet to have the opportunity to try out much of the full new rig yet.
Unsure what species the tree is.

Spacworthy Observatory has closed and is now a mobile rig.
Will be updating over the next few weeks after when we reach the dark skies.

one month in: 26/1/26
Stayed at a variety of caravan parks and scoped out our offgrid capability (before investing in battery & water upgrades).
Currently on a friends property in the Nthn Rivers for a pitstop. A/I Day, hottest we've had so far but the clouds still manage to roll on in in the arvo.
Just dropped from 40˚ to 30˚ in a matter of minutes.

Fancy a sea change? Escape to Australia’s east coast, and your new solidly-built ROR observatory! Comes complete with power, a permanent pier, & a bonus home attached, in the gorgeous coastal town of Ballina, in the Northern Rivers area of Far North Coast NSW.

Look no further, perfect for any astronomer (Bortle 4 😉) .

For those not familiar with the area, Byron Bay is 15 minutes away, the Gold Coast international airport is an hour away, and the local lifestyle is absolutely brilliant!

It's been over six months since my last post, lots of reasons, mainly due to my main imager being away for repair for 10 months.
I finally received my repaired imager, and the skies are in agreement.

It's Milky Way season.
This is M24, the Small Sagittarius Star Cloud.
Not like a star cluster, but a relatively small area of the Sagittarius arm with a highly dense population of approximately 1000 stars.

Lucky Dip #2
Incomplete imaging of 2024.
Found an assortment of colour and narrow-band images of NGC 5128, AKA Centaurus A.
Again due to long stretches of clouds, I had to abandon the data collection and start processing, however, I didn’t have the quantity of data required to get into the dust and grit surrounding this peculiar elliptical galaxy which is only available to us southern hemispheric dwellers.
Evidence suggests that Centaurus A resulted from the merger of an elliptical with a spiral galaxy.
The optical dust lanes surround a highly active centre with a supermassive black hole. Residing at 11-13MLy away its the closest Active galaxy to the Milky Way and about 22 times the size of our Galaxy.
Yes, this is big and loud, as the bright centre suggests.
This (less than standard) optical perspective doesn’t come close to what can be revealed or how large & active CentA is.

This year, I've had a few incomplete narrow-band acquisitions of targets that I was unable to continue working on, mostly due to the weather.
I’ve started processing what I’ve found in the file vat.
I expect not to achieve any colour balance due to not having captured all wavelengths.

First found in the lucky dip is
The Lagoon (M8) and Triffid (M20) nebulae
A two-panel mosaic that was meant to be four panels.
Had enough data to get two panels going however predominantly Hydrogen Alpha. Still need more Sii & Oiii data, or anything other than Ha.

The great Orion and Horsehead Nebulae are featured in the centre and surrounded by the red glow of Barnard's Loop, a large emission nebula, part of the Orion molecular cloud complex.
I've added more data, but I'm not quite on top of the processing of these widefield shots for some reason.

This is the first time i've followed through with a widefield in my bortle 4 Ballina skys. the reward:effort ratio is not great.

The great Orion and Horsehead Nebulae are featured in the centre and surrounded by the red glow of Barnard's Loop, a large emission nebula, part of the Orion molecular cloud complex.

I'll need a lot more data before I can bring it all out.

I'll persist while the imager is away

Still mucking around with the Allsky camera before housing it.
The first time this year I could leave the observatory roof open without the threat of spontaneous rain.
This is Christmas evening and Boxing Day evening.

We've witnessed the weirdest weather this year.
Spontaneous clouds appear above us when it's completely clear then drop tiny hail stones and disappear.
