(Lace monitor lizard)
The tree goanna.🌳🦎

Australia's second-largest lizard (behind the perentie), growing up to 2 meters long and weighing up to 14 kg.

Common form features dark blue-black skin with cream spots, while the Bell's phase showcases striking high-contrast yellow and grey bands across its body.

Females excavate holes in arboreal or ground-based termite mounds to lay eggs. The termites reseal the mound, providing a temperature-controlled incubator for, 7 months.

Equipped with long, powerful curved claws and strong limbs, allowing them to scale tall eucalyptus trees effortlessly.

Like snakes, they possess a deeply forked tongue paired with a Jacobson's organ to track prey and carcasses across large distances.

Our family trip to Conway Beach was an absolute highlight! Staying at the BIG4 in a prawn hut, we spent our days swimming, enjoying a classic beachside barbecue, and relaxing at the park's retro Route 66 Diner. The ultimate highlight was spotting a magnificent lace monitor casually strolling right past our hut. Conway Beach is truly a beautiful getaway!

"Australia’s Greatest Gliding Chameleon"
 (Oz-E Wild’s Friday Photography)
We are showcasing not just Australia's largest gliding marsupial, but also one of its most visual surprises: the Greater Glider!
While they might seem like creatures of pure myth—cat-sized fluffy acrobats with a membrane that turns them into a kite—they are very real, and they come with a fascinating biological quirk: color polymorphism.
In the world of wildlife, "polymorphism" means a species can have multiple, distinct physical forms, and for the Greater Glider, this manifests in their spectacular coats.
As you can see in our featured images today, their color palette is anything but predictable. In one photo, we see a glider in its dark, dramatic form: a deep, velvety, dark chocolate to black charcoal. It looks like a shadow moving through the eucalypt canopy, perfectly adapted for a nocturnal life. This rich coloration is typical for many populations.
Then, swipe to the other side, and you'll find a striking contrast. It’s the same species, but this individual is almost completely white and gray-white. Some are so pale they appear snowy, like a tiny forest spirit. Others have subtle patches or variations of light gray on their back, limbs, and tail. This 'light morph' can appear side-by-side with the dark one, a visual riddle that makes every glider sighting a unique experience. Between these extremes, you can find a whole spectrum of intermediate grey and white combinations.
These images demonstrate why the Greater Glider is a photographer’s dream and a biologist’s delight. They are Australia’s greatest gliding chameleons, showing us that even within a single, extraordinary species, nature loves a diverse canvas.
