The Masters Apprentices Photography Club Inc. – September 2026 Guest Speaker

This month we are going to spend time in Iceland and Kenya…..

Special Guest: Peter O’Brien
Presentation title: ‘Spending time in Iceland and Kenya’

Peter has been taking photos since 1974. His first film camera was a Pratica Super TL and he upgraded to the Olympus OM series after joining the Peninsula Camera Club. His photographic interests are macro travel, nature portraiture and steam trains.

Peter joined the Peninsula Camera Club after talking to Greg Watson, a former member who was attending a welding course at TAFE. Greg’s advice was to “Just come along and see if you like it” and Peter did. He has been a member of the Peninsula Camera Club for almost 35 years.

During this time Peter has held numerous positions – Vice President, on and off for eight years; President, for two years; program officer, organizing lecturers, practical nights and club outings; a member of the selection Committee since 1995; entries officer organizing judges for monthly competition; Club print director for the past 15 years and Peninsula Camera Club delegate to Photographic Society of QLD for six years.

Peter has had extensive experience within the photo club scene, at both State and National levels. He has helped organise and judge interclub and national competitions. He has also entered National and International competitions within Australia since 1991 and has gained L.A.P.S. in 1994; A.A.P.S. in 1997; S.S.A.P.S. in 2000 and FAPS and EFIAP 2006.

Not only has Peter been involved in participating in and organising competitions, but he has also been a camera club judge since 1992, judging locally and nationally. Peter has been a member of the Masters Apprentices Photography Club Inc. for a number of years, and gives his wisdom and time to help the Club and members in their photographic endeavours. He offers a unique way of seeing and through his travel, he shares the joy of being somewhere else in the world. Peter’s advice for new members is to enjoy photography and listen to what the judges have to say. You will not always agree with them, after all it is only one person’s opinion. Don’t be afraid to ask for assistance, we all had to start somewhere.

Our meeting will be held on Wednesday evening, 2 September 2026 at 6.45pm for a 7.00 pm start at St Bartholomew’s Anglican Church, 1357 Logan Road, Mount Gravatt.

The Quiet Early Hour
We rose early to view the rock called ‘The Wave’ before our journey for the day began. Quietness filled the air, as though the world had not yet woken, and we whispered so as not to break the solitude.

I am not a morning person, but I stood in awe of the light, so soft and smooth. The cold sent shivers down my spine, yet within I felt stillness. Dew drops hung from leaves, gently moving in the breeze. Twinkles of sunlight touched them and, like dancers, they moved as one.

For a while I was simply still. No viewfinder to my eye. No searching for photographs. Just solitude and me.
What had I done to receive such a gift of peace? No thinking, no rumination, no sadness, no depression — just stillness and a sense of peace. Oh, to stay like this. What joy.

“Aren’t you going to take any photos?” a voice asked, and just like that, the moment was gone.
For a moment I felt sad, but then I quietly put the viewfinder to my eye and I was home, making images from the gifts I had received in those brief moments of stillness.

We have travelled nearly 10,000 kilometres in the last six weeks, and this special moment will be the highlight of my journey.

Motion within Stillness

Standing above the Southern Ocean over the past few days, I found myself returning again and again simply to watch. The Southern Ocean is as peaceful as it is powerful. At first, all I noticed was its immense energy—the thunder of waves crashing against the rocks, the cold wind and the relentless force of the sea. Yet the longer I stood there, the more I became aware of the quiet that followed. After each impact, the water gently retreated, flowing peacefully around the rocks before the next wave arrived.

The rocks quietly remained, absorbing everything the ocean could throw at them while the water constantly changed around them. Their stillness gave meaning to the movement.

Long after I had made my photographs, I stayed and watched, listening to the changing rhythm of the Southern Ocean. It seemed to revel in the cold wind, putting on a spectacular display of strength, yet beneath that power was a quiet presence that drew me back again and again. This assignment reminded me that stillness is not the absence of movement, but the presence of something constant within it.

Local Photography Exhibition Showcases Creative Vision in Wynnum
The Masters’ Apprentices Photography Club Inc. invites the community to experience Unbound: The Creative Lens Exhibition, a vibrant showcase of contemporary photography by Queensland-based artists.
Running from 19–21 May 2026 at the Wynnum Community Centre Gallery, the exhibition explores a diverse range of styles and techniques, including abstract expression, intentional camera movement, double exposure, and traditional photographic practices. The collection highlights innovative approaches that push the boundaries of visual storytelling.
Visitors can expect a dynamic display of creativity from emerging and established photographers, offering fresh perspectives and unique artistic voices. Some examples of the work on display are shown below (all images are supplied by Judi Neumann who owns the copyright on each).
