a **Hibiscus Harlequin Bug, *Tectocoris diophthalmus***.

It's also called the Cotton Harlequin Bug, and it's a common native jewel bug right up the east coast of Australia, including around Brisbane / Maryborough.

That bright orange-red shield with the metallic blue-green legs and trim is their signature. They're in the Scutelleridae family — those big, rounded shield backs that look almost like a beetle.

They love hibiscus, cotton and similar plants, and they hang around on the tips of leaves and buds just like in your photo. Completely harmless to people, though they can cluster in big numbers on hibiscus in summer. That iridescent colour is all natural — no filter needed!

Wooohoooo Wow!!
A Red-tailed Black Cockatoo - Spotted 3 Red-tailed Black-Cockatoos today, all sitting high in a big dead tree - each one on its own branch. Managed to get this one! Such a beautiful sight.

Male - you can tell by the solid black plumage and those bright red feathers Females have more yellow-orange barring and spots.

They're a beautiful sighting. That tall crest, big dark bill, and the little flash of red under the tail when they take off are the giveaways.

In our area of Queensland they're pretty common around eucalypt woodlands and along watercourses, often in small noisy flocks. They feed mostly on eucalypt and casuarina seeds. I

not easy to get them sitting still for long!
