Emily Grace and I returned to the March For Australia, one year later. The immense crowds are gone, the neo-Nazis and their messages remain and are clearer than ever, and a Chicken Man has joined.

“Of course, speak in the abstract. Be careful, because this is just the beginning,” an organiser told the crowd.

March For Australia's One Year Anniversary March For Australia:

The immense crowds of a year ago have not returned, but a 'label-less resistance' and a Chicken Man have.

There's more to it, of course, and the story link is in my bio.

I had a bizarre night

Pauline Hanson barred reporters from multiple publications from her Melbourne event. Not me, but that didn’t prevent me from having one of the strangest experiences I’ve ever had in journalism.

Pauline Hanson has announced her candidates for November’s Victorian state election, but barred journalists from The ABC, The Guardian and The Age from her party's campaign events. I went to cover a protest against one such event for Crikey AND to One Nation's event to photograph the party's Victorian candidates for SOPA Images. I was granted access to One Nation's 'Meet The Candidates' event for eight minutes before I was singled out and physically pushed out of the venue for unclear reasons.

So, we're scrapping the candidate photos for now, because things got weird. You can read about that at the link on my page. Thank you to Crikey for working with my unexpected twists.

Other images from the night will soon be available for use through SOPA Images, if that's your cup of tea.

On any given Saturday in Victoria's capital, they'll be at least one protest. Last weekend, there were four.

Melbourne has been called, often derogatorily, the protest capital of Australia. Is it? I went to four protests in one day to find out.

Between the anti-trans activists, pro-trans counter-protesters, socialist demonstrators, and anti-spy rally-goers, I saw moments of joy, of anger, of beauty, a light breeze worth turning into a gif, a chronically online epithet, dancing of various quality-levels, enough police to crew a military ship, pebbles thrown from a rooftop terrace, and a large bug resting near a residue-filled plastic baggy.

And that's just the start of it. You can (should) read all about it, and see for yourself, at the link on my page.

What a city. For Crikey
