Hello Gorgeous indeed! That time I came face to face - with no fences - and hung out with the silverbacks in the volcanoes National Park in Rwanda. Yep - the legit Gorillas in the Mist! One of my most special and significant travel experiences. I have been reflecting on this experience as I prepare to head back to the capital Kigali this weekend. Curious what it was like? Well, if you’d like to know all about it check out the blog post in the Journal section of my website - link is below!

If you ever thought of doing this - all I can say is you must! I had the greatest tour guides and I have included a link in the blog too!

Rwanda is a stunning country with a complex history. A devastating, brutal and complex recent history which informs the country’s actions everyday in their efforts to ‘never again’ experience the genocide which tore the country apart in 1994. The genocide memorial and other significant sites you can visit across the country and I was fortunate to, are operated by survivors and relatives of those who lost their lives to ensure the devastation is not repeated and serves to educate future generations in Rwanda and all who visit. The sites I visited were so visceral I chose to not photograph. A decision that still feels like the right one today. Respect was the most important thing and it was a lot to process.

What I was able to photograph away from these significant memorial sites and resting places was the cultural joy, the beautiful people and the stunning scenery which also leave their indelible mark on you. (The first image in this post was even published by National Geographic on my return - what a thrill!)

As I prepare to return to the capital Kigali albeit briefly this weekend on the journey to Murgwanza in Tanzania, I am feeling grateful - grateful Murgwanza Hospital which is the focus of this upcoming trip was founded in the 1920’s by Australian missionaries and served as one of the major (and nearest) medical care facilities for the Tutsi’s who made it over the border in 1994. That is now part of Murgwanza Hospital’s story - a medical facility relied on by so many in the region to this day - regardless of borders. And that makes Murgwanza Hospital worth saving. Let’s see what this trip can do to support that work…

I never thought I would return to Rwanda. It’s an incredible country and I felt fortunate to visit there once. But next weekend I will return to the capital Kigali as part of the long journey from Melbourne to Murgwanza Hospital in Tanzania on photo assignment for Medical Mission Aid Inc Our journey beginning Friday at lunchtime will see us fly Melbourne - Singapore - Addis Ababa - Kigali. There we have a day and a night in the city before taking the final leg of our journey to Murgwanza by road. Three hours by road through the ‘land of a thousand hills’ and we will cross the border into Tanzania. There our hosts from the Murgwanza Hopsital will collect us and take us to our little cottage within the hospital compound which will be our home for the next 8 days or so. As you can tell, just the journey to get there will be something!

And as for this image - it was taken from the window of a four wheel drive as we set off out of Kigali to regional areas of Rwanda on my previous visit. I love it so much it’s even available for sale as a limited edition print in my art store on my website. Everything just came together in a fast moving magical connection between the camera and subject. ❤️

I am thrilled to share I will be traveling to rural northern Tanzania late next week to photograph and film for Medical Mission Aid Inc (MMA) https://medicalmissionaid.org.au/

MMA is a registered charity that partners with local organisations to improve the health of the most vulnerable communities globally.

I will be traveling alongside 4 other professionals including Melbourne Obstetrician and incredible MMA Ambassador Amanda Ward, Melinda van der Westhuizen GAICD, Seamus van der Westhuizen and Jesselyn Sin – specialists in their own respective fields - to further the strategic impact of MMA.

We will be based at Murgwanza Hospital in the Ngara region. The 200-bed hospital was established by Australian Missionaries in the 1920’s and is the largest of 3 hospitals in the Ngara region, and services a population of 450,000 across 3 borders.

MMA has been partnering with Murgwanza Hospital since 2007 and have provided over 40 scholarships for doctors, nurses and allied health staff. MMA has also been supporting and funding preventative health education programs at a nearby school.

MMA’s vision is to see the Murgwanza Hospital provide the health care needs of the Ngara region, through an improvement in hospital facilities, staffing and infrastructure.

The focus of my time on in Murgwanza will be to interview people about, photograph and film stories of impact of MMA’s support so far but most importantly create materials for a potential major capital fundraising campaign to save the hospital from falling into complete disrepair.

I am very pleased to be providing my services to MMA pro bono and also volunteer to sit on their Hospital Redevelopment Committee to provide value by drawing on my diverse career experiences to date.

It’s going to be a powerful and important journey. I can’t wait!

My thanks to MMA's brilliant Executive Director, Brenton Ward and Board Chair, Barry Kelly.
