It’s the new year and the sun’s out!  At least for 5 minutes in Melbourne anyway.  You’re hitting the beach, the pool, the gym, eating lots of healthy food (sort of) and sipping the odd 🍸

And for anyone with kids you’re (trying to) explain - yet again- why playing Brawl Stars from 6am is not on.

So life is pretty good and planning a photo shoot could be just what you need to visually elevate you and your business this year. If you’re not sure where to start, never fear I have all the information ready for you to read, while you enjoy your morning coffee.

Trust me when I say there is something for everyone here, I’ve really thrown my left shoulder into this one. 💪🏻

Side note, speaking of food I just discovered Prahran Food Market this week…be still my gastronomical heart!

Nature, floral, harmony, peace, happy.

These were a few of the words that Ruth Morgan described for herself and her new homemade skincare business. They guided me in how to approach and style her portrait shoot, right down to the location and outfit. We kept the process simple but intentional.

Thinking about the words that resonate with who you are, is a simple but very important exercise to undertake from time to time. All you need to do is take 5 minutes alone, with no distractions. Think about the top 5 words that feel like you in a professional capacity. The ‘feel like’ part is essential for your mind to do the right work and for those words to ring true. You also often find there will be an overlap of you at home and at work.

Some wonderful and transformative things happen to you when you perform this exercise. It allows you to be in the moment, creative and even get a bit bored. The mind gets a much needed rest, it recovers, it creates and it provides insights that maybe you weren’t aware of or have chosen to ignore. And if it doesn't come to you now I guarantee it will, at some random moment when you’re driving or performing another day-to-day task.

When you've thought about your words, write them down - and then consider that in two contexts, not just your photo, but indeed what you do.

Is everything aligned – or at least mostly? If not, maybe a goal for 2026 is think about next steps you could take or professionals you could speak with to get you on your way. I used to worry about the outcomes of this exercise a little, but now I view it as an opportunity.

I'm curious to hear what your 5 words are - if you’re game to share.

AI vs. Human: Why Your Brand Needs Real Words 💭

AI can make anyone sound like a Booker Prize winner 📚✨

The challenge is that everyone is starting to sound the same. That concerned me because how do I stand out? How do any of us? Why would anyone want to read my not so perfect, from the heart & head musings? 🤔

So I've decided to use AI for the boring stuff admin & giving me ideas and structure when I'm stuck. But most of the actual words? Those are mine. Imperfect and different and interesting (well I think they are).

I seem to be on the right track, according to Nuala from who answered That question. Why are you better than AI?

"AI can generate words quickly, but it doesn’t understand the heart, nuance, or lived experience behind a brand. It will tell you what you want to hear, it won't challenge you or read your personality. Brands are starting to sound & look the same. Who wants that? I'd rather have writing full of human mistakes & imperfect grammar because ultimately building a brand is building trust, & we trust humans more than machines (I hope)!"

The proof? Nuala recently transformed a tech company's website. She stripped it back, simplified the copy, & made the messaging all about the customers...their needs, their frustrations, & how the app made their lives easier. And boom 📈 way more conversions.

Nuala's previous headshots are from when she worked for other companies, neither tailored for her personality or appearance. To increase her business reach Nuala realised that some professional branding portraits were required & the importance of showing her face - as she is now. If she wanted to be taken seriously as a professional, she needed to look that way. Nuala now has a repository of images that she can turn too for marketing.

Who's writing your content - you or a robot? 💬

Bridget Kennedy was recently elected as the Deputy Mayor of my childhood suburb Lane Cove in Sydney. She is also an artist, jewellery designer and now local politician, as the Deputy Mayor of Lane Cove - my childhood suburb. Bridget hadn't updated her photos for years and was looking for portraits that reflected who she is today - including a new hairstyle!

I’ve worked with Bridget, or BK, in a previous professional life as an Analyst. She hasn’t changed and as she noted, it really was like sitting down for a few hours with an old friend and a camera.

Bridget’s home is an extension of her personality and what matters to her – family, fun, sustainability, community, art and Vader the Devonshire Rex. Yes their little feline furball is named after Darth Vader. It therefore made sense that we used the backdrop of her home and self-sustaining edible garden for these environmental portraits and she was thrilled with the results.

“She made me feel at ease, and fully utilised the spaces we worked within to produce creative imagery. The experience was also lots of fun!”

Bridget has a wonderful sense of humour and she is using her influence pragmatically to improve our relationship with the environment and how we care for it. The imagery had to reflect that commitment and seriousness of the mission.

I was actually so inspired by the morning that I went home and planted my first vegetable garden. I know, where have I been… And today I’ve been able to blitz the vege’s into juice. Does the resulting drink resemble the surface of a stagnant pond? Absolutely, but you can smell the vegetables as you chop them and feel the goodness as you drink them. As a city girl too reliant on supermarkets, it’s about time and I welcomed Bridget’s positive influence on my behaviour.

She's a woman of many talents. For some bling, check out Bridget’s artistry here

When I met client and now friend Carla Ting, of Merrington Consulting, I had no idea what a Bookkeeper or BAS Agent did or how helpful one could be.

When you meet Carla, you can tell she absolutely loves what she does. She's pretty straight up and said she didn't understand how I enjoyed working with people who didn't enjoy getting their photo taken - wasn't it stressful? As you could imagine, I didn't hold back on what I thought of 'preparing financial records' every quarter!

The first place we venture on websites is the About Us section. Until working with me, Carla's hero shot was a stock photo of stacked books. She relied on casual smartphone photos. Carla has such an engaging personality, deep experience and commitment to clients, yet you couldn't sense that online. Your photos can incorrectly signal 'emerging' when you're 'established' - costing you authority and opportunities you don't even know exist.

Why did Carla wait so long to update her branding images? She felt uncomfortable in front of the camera and wasn't sure how to present herself effectively. I hear these pain points constantly, with good reason.

My aim was making Carla feel at ease with clear direction, making the experience enjoyable rather than stressful. See me like a friend with a camera - I wanted to understand why she loved bookkeeping.

Carla's tagline is 'Creating Harmony from the Hectic'. She explained: "I enjoy solving financial puzzles and finding efficient ways to manage accounts. The satisfaction of seeing clients succeed and knowing I've contributed to their growth is highly rewarding."

📕 During our shoot, Carla was so passionate talking about her work and I captured this energy and expertise visually.

💡 Now her potential clients get to see this too.

They call it dopamine dressing. Wearing outfits that makes you feel good. And who doesn’t like a solid hit of those natural endorphins to impact our overall well-being.

Someone was only telling me yesterday how she's avoided getting her professional headshot updated for years because she gets too nervous. When we then somehow got onto our respective outfits, I watched her get visibly happier chatting about a favourite piece of clothing and why. It sounds so fundamental, but feeling good in what you wear plays such an important role in how confident you feel in front of the camera. It also allows you to project your individual identity and attract 'your kind of client.'

Burgundy (or berry) is one of my favourite colours and it works for pretty much everyone. It’s a classic and timeless colour that evokes a variety of emotions - strength, stability, sophistication and warmth. Think of it like the colour navy. Shirts, jackets, dresses, ties, pants, a pocket square. You can then combo it with colours and shades like navy, light blue, pink, green, white, black and grey.

And to any of the gents reading this and thinking I don’t care about this sort of thing…. Well maybe you don’t right now but you are also often the same lovely men who walk in on shoot day with Quite the selection of ties and pocket squares to workshop what will work best. And so you should. You’re not doing this very often, (maybe your wedding day or someone else's was the last time) so we make it count in an easy way. I provide all of my clients with pre shoot styling ideas to get you started and I also work with Personal Stylists who are the true experts at this. And where relevant, we also take into account your website branding colour palette.

Beautiful bold burgundy. Check out the sales on now, or with your sustainable hat on see if you can borrow or hit the op shops, which now also feature designer sections.

As I live and breathe the new website and refreshed branding is Live!

🤔 Let's start with the good old why? I'm a professional at hiding behind the lens. Most of you want to hide behind the lens too. That doesn't really help you work out if I'm the right photographer for you though does it? So for you to be vulnerable, so must I be.

Time to get a bit deep. What are my underpinning life and photography philosophies?

Connection & Belonging: vulnerability for me is about going beyond the superficial and understanding the depth of what makes someone tick. I'm not talking a therapy session here - just something beyond talking about the weather and the footie

Approaching life with a soft humour: there’s so much seriousness in the world, through my humour I help others rediscover joy and happiness.

Quality Work: Good work is about attention to detail, deep understanding, beyond superficial. Understanding what’s important to different people. Quality is also about the quality experience.

Resonant creativity: I approach each project (small or big) with a combination of intuition and trust in the creative process.

Getting real: we operate in a filtered and curated world, my aim is to get back to the heart of who you really are, your purpose, your vision, and capture your connection to your authentic self. You through my lens - a true portrait of you - not just a headshot.

So what else have we got here?

📕 Resources & Guides that informand entertain. And we are just getting started...

🎉 As a launch treat I am offering 10% off all of my experience packages booked during July -valid for 6 months from the date of booking.

It's been a while coming...

The bones were already there — seventeen years of capturing lovely humans and a website that did it's job (mostly). But something was missing. It wasn't telling the real story of what happens when we work together. Or the whole story from Cuban tobacconists in Havana to several Prime Ministers at home.

Enter brand strategist and ex*****on expert Kath Clarke.

Kath saw what I couldn't quite articulate – like when you say to a two year old ‘use your words’. My work has never been just about headshots and events. It's about helping purpose-driven leaders step into their resonance. And also capturing all the emotion and interactions that goes with celebrating being together.

How I use light and shadow not just technically, but emotionally. Why I'd prefer to spend a little (or a lot of) time understanding your vision rather than rushing through a production line experience.

The new site reflects all of this — the philosophy, the process, the surprisingly enjoyable experience. It’s unpretentious and shows how I help people just be themselves.

This snazzy site will be live very soon, and I can't wait to share it with you.

The softer light of autumn begins.

It was Sophie’s first time modelling. We added in some intensity of expression, and she did amazingly well in front of the camera.

With a little direction these style of shoots can be an enormous confidence booster for young ladies (& men).

I walked into the kitchen of one my Client’s offices a few weeks ago and they were looking at some photos pinned on the wall of a themed event they attended the previous year. The imagery still makes them laugh. Who doesn’t love a good dress-up! In a post Covid world where I constantly hear about businesses searching for opportunities to bring the team together, that’s social connection and bonding - right there.

It’s that time of year when everyone starts planning end-of-year functions and celebrations. Interestingly a photographer is often one of the last vendors booked but as you can see, guess what everyone is looking at and reflecting on long after the CEO thanks everyone for their support and the petit fours have been devoured. When we see flattering and engaging photos of ourselves laughing and talking with others, we feel good and we want more of those feelings and experiences with the people we work with and the company we work for. It’s one of the things I miss most about being an employee.

And popping the marketing hat on for a hot second, when you have flattering, elegant and interesting imagery, you have commercially beneficial shareable content. If a guest, speaker or staff member likes an image of themselves, they are far more likely to share the post or the image, which is beneficial to the function host from brand awareness and engagement and employee of choice perspectives. A staff member shows a friend working for another business, or one of the event speakers shares an image of themselves mid presentation and talks about what a great event it was. This post is then commented on, re-shared and so on.

So when you’re planning your next event, think about how some well-lit and engaging imagery can keep the memories and key messages of that event alive, long after yet another superb dance-floor rendition of Whitney Houston’s ‘I Want to Dance with Somebody.’ I’m even happy to throw in a set of 4x6 event prints for your office.
