David Simmonds Photographer Commercial & Fine Art Photographer Based in Melbourne, I work anywhere. Working with and mentoring young people is also one of my passions.

I love photography, and that passion drives me to create strong and beautiful images, no matter what the context or situation. Working creatively, both alone and in collaboration, is still a joy even after more than 30 years in the industry, during which time I've covered just about every aspect of professional photography. Our Spring photography retreat started Friday evening with inspiring presentations by landscape & travel photographer and artist sharing their creative process. Much lively & enjoyable discussion was had, which would have continued long into the night if we didn’t have to get up very early next morning for a sunrise/dawn shoot!

The power of the pano lies in the expansive view without pushing the subject away. Breaking free from the 3:2 35mm frame format requires seeing outside “the box”. The greatest power any photographer has lies in composition and the post production crop. Seeing the scene outside of the camera frame and shooting for a Panoramic format is especially useful if you plan to print large. Either way, what makes this 1:3 image is the original capture by Stephen Jude (from our Winter Retreat), he had the timing just right, the sun burst and the lone figure all adding to a stunning image of one of our wild locations off the great Ocean Road. There’s still a spot left if you want to join us - info at www.simmondsphotosafaris.com

As a long time commercial and fine art photographer of the built environment, I love this image by Pam Rixon, created at our last workshop. While this is a stunning and surprising piece of human creation in an otherwise natural landscape, it is Pam’s vision & point of view that makes it such an outstanding image. Pam lay on her stomach with a wide angle lens to include the sky, bringing a static concrete structure to life. The mono treatment really makes it sing. Pam used one of my core tenants of good photography - take me to a POV I don’t normally see, and move & inspire me.

I often talk of Natural Abstraction in our workshops. This is it at perfection Ian van der Wolde has a sublime minimalist approach so well supported by the choice of a monochrome rendition with such subtle and wide range of tones. This is not just the luck of time and place it’s the well honed technical knowledge and choice of equipment coupled with a creative caring soul that allows Ian to create such sublime and beautiful images. Then to finally print faithfully on an Ilford fine art archival paper. This knowledge is yours to share in and learn from at our next Spring Photography Retreat in Port Campbell on November 7-10, 2025. As a photographer, I also like to create in other mediums. Found object sculpture is another passion, and my creative juices have been flowing lately with my entry into the exhibition in the Colac Botanic Gardens (this is a detail from “Nest”). It’s all about seeing the possibility in what is around you.

Same with photography. It’s what Ian van der Wolde (my friend & co-presenter) and I encourage our workshop participants to do, seeing new possibilities & creatively explore photography techniques to produce beautiful fine art prints. Our Spring workshop is almost here and we’re excited to once again share knowledge & experience. It’s also great fun.

We still have a couple of spots left if you want to join us 7-10 November in Port Campbell, Victoria. Go to www.simmondsphotosafaris.com for details

Some years ago I had a lovely job creating & providing artwork for an inner city resort. They wanted to bring the excitement & life of Melbourne’s streets & lanes into their building to inspire their guests to go out and explore. They request more of these works from time to time, as is the case just now. I thought I’d share some works from this series, which I call “Melbourne 10,800”. They are composites of the many moments of life passing through a particular viewpoint over a 3 hour (10,800 seconds) period. In this case, St Paul’s Cathedral on the intersection of Flinders & Swanston Streets.
