We had plans for her session - including making the most of the beautiful garden at our location.

Then the rain arrived ๐Ÿ˜‚

But this is exactly why I like to plan a shoot properly beforehand. We simply changed things around without skipping a beat! We worked indoors first and waited for our opportunity.

And when the rain finally cleared? The garden was absolutely beautiful.

Thereโ€™s something about a garden just after the rain - the colours seem to pop, the greens become richer and everything feels that little bit more vibrant.

Add in that beautiful soft, overcast light, and it gave us a completely different feel to what we might have had earlier in the day.

A good plan gives us direction.

But being able to adapt on the day is often where some of my favourite images happen โค๏ธ

You don't have to arrive at your shoot feeling completely confident.

In fact, most people don't.

Part of my job is giving you the direction and reassurance you need so you don't have to wonder what to do with your hands, how to stand, or whether you're doing it "right".

Give yourself a little time to settle in.

The confidence will come. โค๏ธ

My 100mm macro lens.

And when I say old friend... I genuinely don't think I've used this lens in about 10 years.

Lately I've been noticing all the little signs of spring appearing on my walks. Tiny buds on the trees, new growth starting to appear and everything slowly coming back to life after winter.

So today, I decided to take my camera with me.

Most of the photography I do these days is for my business. There's a client, a brief, a plan and a purpose behind what I'm creating.

This was different.

I put on a lens I hadn't used in years and wandered around photographing tiny things simply because they caught my eye.

Now, I am definitely not about to reinvent myself as a nature photographer. ๐Ÿ˜‚ There are plenty of incredibly talented photographers who do this far better than anything I'm presenting here!

But that really wasn't the point.

There was something lovely about reacquainting myself with a piece of equipment I'd almost forgotten about, slowing down and just playing with it again.

No brief.

No client.

No particular purpose.

Just me, my camera and lots of tiny signs that spring has finally arrived. ๐ŸŒฑ

I'd forgotten how nice it is to sometimes take photographs just because you want to. โค๏ธ

Honestly... knowing that winter is nearly over. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Anyone who knows me knows I feel the cold right down to my bones. Which is slightly ridiculous considering I grew up in Canberra and am certainly no stranger to a freezing winter!

But these days, winter just feels a little harder.

And then we get to this point in August where I start to feel hopeful again. Spring isn't far away. The days are getting a little longer, there are glimpses of warmer weather, and you know that soon it'll be just that little bit easier to get out and about without having to put on seventeen layers first.

This year I have something extra to look forward to as well - a little trip up north with some girlfriends in September. Sunshine, fun things planned and, most importantly, a chance to thaw out these bones. ๐Ÿ˜‚โ˜€๏ธ

So perhaps what I love most about this time of year isn't actually the season at all...

It's the anticipation of what's coming next. โค๏ธ

Photography first came into my life when I was about 17.

I picked up a camera, started experimenting and absolutely loved it. I remember thinking that maybe this was something I could actually do.

But I didn't.

At that age, I didn't have the confidence. I didn't think I was creative enough, so I took a very different path.

I studied science at university, went on to work in government and spent time living and working overseas.

For quite a few years, photography quietly disappeared from my life.

Until I moved to the UK.

I was travelling a lot through Europe, usually with a little automatic film camera tucked into my bag. Nothing fancy, but I loved taking photographs again.

I remember looking at places and thinking, if only I had a proper camera with me...

That little spark I'd had at 17 was still there.

Eventually, in my mid-30s, I decided to come back and do the thing I'd been too unsure of myself to pursue all those years earlier.

Photography went from something I loved to my livelihood.

It hasn't always been easy. Running your own business rarely is.

But I have an enormous sense of pride in the fact that I get to earn my living doing something I genuinely love.

These days, most of my photography is for other people - creating personal branding and corporate imagery that helps them tell their story and build their businesses. And I love that.

But I also know there's another chapter waiting for me.

One day, when photography no longer needs to earn me a living, I'll pick up my camera simply because I want to.

I'll photograph landscapes. I'll experiment. I'll create without a brief or any purpose other than the joy of it.

So on World Photography Day, I'm grateful for everything this craft has given me.

It gave 17-year-old me a creative outlet.

It found me again while I was travelling.

It gave thirty-something me the courage to change direction.

It gave me a business, a livelihood and something I'm incredibly proud of.

And I have a feeling photography will be part of my life long after the business is gone. โค๏ธ๐Ÿ“ท

My VA.โœจ

And if you're a small business owner, you probably already understand why. ๐Ÿ˜Š

As a small business owner, there are always a hundred things happening behind the scenes.

Client work.
Emails.
Projects.
Content.
The endless little tasks that keep everything moving.

Over the last few months, she's lightened that load in a way that has made a real difference.

She's in the trenches with us every day, always brings a positive attitude, and more often than not comes to us with a solution rather than another problem to solve.

And if you're a business owner, you'll know just how valuable that is.

It's easy to focus on the big milestones in business, but sometimes it's the people who quietly make your day easier that deserve the biggest thank you.

Sometimes the best investment you make in your business isn't a new camera or the latest piece of lighting equipment.

It's finding the right person to walk alongside you. โค๏ธ

Some friendships have a wonderful way of picking up exactly where they left off.

Life gets busy. Businesses grow. People move. Months can pass between catch-ups.

But the friendships that really matter don't seem to notice.

You sit down together, and within minutes it's as though no time has passed at all. There's no pressure, no guilt - just shared history, trust and the comfort of knowing you've always got each other.

Looking through these photos, I couldn't help but laugh... somehow I'm standing on the right-hand side in every single one! ๐Ÿ˜‚ Completely unplanned, but apparently that's just where I belong.

To the women who have walked beside me through different seasons of my life... thank you. You know who you are. โค๏ธ

I'd love to know... who's the friend you can go months without seeing, yet it feels like no time has passed when you're together again? I'd love to hear about them in the commebnts. And if their on facebook, tag them - I think we all need a reminder sometimes of just how much our friendships mean โค๏ธ

There are lots of lovely things clients say after a photoshoot.

They tell me they love their images๐Ÿ˜

They tell me they felt comfortable in front of the camera๐Ÿ˜Ž

They tell me the experience was easier than they expected๐Ÿ˜œ

And I genuinely love hearing all of those things.

But recently, one client said something a little different.

After her branding session, Jacquelina wrote:

I loved that because it gets to the heart of what personal branding photography is really about.

Yes, we're creating beautiful images.

But we're also creating images for:

The next chapter.

The next level.

The business they're building.

Because great branding photography isn't just about where you are today. It's about creating images that support where you're headed next.

Recently, I had the privilege of photographing Jacquelina, founder of , who is helping ambitious women reduce the mental load of modern life through AI education and practical systems.

I've shared a little more about Jacquelina's session and the story behind these images on the blog.

When people think about a personal branding photoshoot, they often picture someone standing in front of a camera, smiling.

But there's so much more happening behind the scenes.

It's about creating a library of images that truly reflects who you are and where your business is headed.

It's about creating an experience where you feel comfortable enough to stop thinking about being photographed... and simply be yourself.

Because that's when the magic happens.

I've shared a little more about Jacquelina and her branding session for over on the blog.

51 today ๐ŸŽˆ

At this point in life, Iโ€™ve survived low-rise jeans,
dial-up internet,
burning CDs for road trips,
plucking my eyebrows into oblivion,
and taking photos on actual filmโ€ฆ where you had absolutely no idea how they turned out until they came back from the chemist ๐Ÿ˜…

Which honestly feels slightly ironic considering I became a photographer in the digital age.

And somehowโ€ฆ
I think Iโ€™m actually getting better with age, wrinkles and all

Or maybe just better at caring less.

Either way, Iโ€™ll take it ๐Ÿค
