Andrew Hunter-Graham Photography Melbourne based photographer: Landscape, Aviation, Documentary, People, Architecture and Aerial. Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

Photographer of various genres, based in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. As a young child growing up I traveled through and saw much of Australia with my family, much more than the average child my age and more than most people will in their whole lifetime. This is where I first began to explore photography, borrowing the family camera to take my own photographs of the vast, unending and remote la

ndscapes, places and creatures that I passed through, stopped at and came across along the way. All good things come to an end though and at the end of any particular holiday, it was back to Melbourne…

Eventually I received my own point and shoot camera as a gift. A few years later, in the final few years of High School I made the decision to take up photography as a subject. As time passed by I became more and more immersed in all things photography and saved up for my very first DSLR, there was no going back! In 2014 I took the opportunity to continue my photography studies at RMIT for another two years. Over the years of suburban living, a very keen interest in aviation photography, aerial photography and air to air photography has developed alongside my landscape photography. Visits to the Avalon air show and living under a flight path began the general interest in aviation, but most importantly it was a scenic flight over Lake Eyre in 2012 that combined flight and photography. This sparked my undying desire, to one day take photos from the air. This continues to be what I am working towards. Currently I am continuing to develop my own portfolio of work across landscape, aviation and architectural photography. Where possible I am taking on photographic jobs and assisting work to aid in expanding my knowledge, skills and industry experience.

A few of my favourite photos from the Australian International Airshow at Avalon Airport this year.
I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with the event, so it was a last-minute decision to head down for the Friday afternoon/evening show... It was a mix of the weather looking perfect, a cool breeze and clearing clouds that really persuaded me! Never enough time to see it ALL in just half a day but what can you do... Dodged a bullet with the weekend crowds which was a major win 🤓

By far the highlight of this year's show was the stunning display from The Republic of Korea Air Force Aerobatic Team, Black Eagles 블랙이글스 I have never seen anything quite like it before and rightfully so, the team won the award for the "Best Overall Display".

Just a few photos of some of the flying displays for now...

2021 marks 10 years of photography for me.
Heading into my final 3 years of high school, I couldn’t have predicted what was ahead, the highs, the lows or the longevity of my decision to pursue photography.
It has been a pretty modest 10 years but with highs that ticked the right boxes and lows that are painfuly etched into my brain, I have kept at it regardless.
My personal photography has fallen to the side a bit, I feel less importance on getting my photography out there and recognised after hitting a sour note with “social media” at various levels.
These are a collection of photos from along the way that have been awarded, recognised, well received or are from special places to me and personal highlights that have helped shape me along the way.
Thanks for following along for some of it and to those who have been a part of it 😊

Here is one of my favorite photos from the Tyabb Airshow, organised by Peninsula Aero Club on the 8th of March 2020.

This is the Rebel 300, it was at the show with Paul Bennet Airshows and did several amazing aerobatic performances over the crowd.

When you take a moment to really notice how a moving propeller looks to the human eye, this is how it looks! Cameras and phones alike can be known to absolutely butcher this beautiful effect, both in the air and on the ground.

In the air it can be a lot more difficult to capture, so while paused on the taxiway, I had a few minutes to really explore how low I could go to achieve this smooth prop blur.

I am well and truly hooked on our beautiful alpine environment, I have been since I was very young!

This is yet another sunrise added to the countless tally. Each and every one is so different from the others. Some are incredible, in between or just fail to deliver, but that time of the morning is always special as everything slowly begins to wake.

I thought this photo would be a nice one to finish off the year and I guess the decade! It’s not without thoughts of the fires in East Gippsland though...

I created this photo of a beautiful alpine waterway early one morning while I was up in the mountains volunteering. The entire week was quite smokey due to the fires in NSW and East Gippsland, so some of that smoke haze added a little more colour to the horizon.

This was such a nice spot though, the stream cutting its way through the open and native grassy plains, past the cluster of Snowgums and larger shrubs before flowing on off into the distance. I wasn’t expecting this photo so the long exposure had to be carefully handheld!

The end and the beginning of the last 5 years have been great for my landscape photography and will continue all going well!

It’s a bit crazy to think of all that has passed over the last 10 years! What I’m most proud of is my small but vital contribution to this unique part of our environment, a place I have always loved so much!

Such an incredible experience! Yesterday I went for a fly with Don of Tiger Moth Joy Flights Yarra Valley in a beautiful DeHavilland DH-82A Tiger Moth! It was part of my prize for winning the inaugural Kelair Aviation Photography Competition earlier in the year!

So incredible experiencing flight in an open cockpit, the wind rushing by as we did a lap of the Yarra Valley, an area I’ve driven through so many times over the past few years.

It’s something else to know that force of wind that you don’t really experience in a closed cockpit will whip your phone or camera out of your hands if your not careful 😳 So it was with care that I took this photo of the unique wings and airfield down below as we were on base to Lilydale Airport.

Could not recommend the experience enough to anyone, whether you have flown before or not... Maybe you have only experienced the environment of a closed-in cockpit?!

While I spent the majority of the day driving and at the Mansfield base taking photos, the day was largely planned out to make the most of the big drive. So, with Healesville along the route and two Aircranes based there I just had to time myself to be in the right place at the time the two Erickson Aircranes were likely to depart for the day and arrive back for the night.

Until the 6th of March, I had only seen an Aircrane fly into Essendon from a distance so what I witnessed at Healesville was really incredible.

In the morning I watched both the aircraft lift off and depart the helipad. Then to my surprise HTK 748 circled around Maroondah Reservoir, lowered its ram scoop and went in for the fill, skimming the surface of the reservoir. It was an absolute treat to see. The photos from such a distance weren’t great though. Then in the afternoon I was cutting it a little fine and only caught the arrival of HTK 730 by a matter of minutes, but the light was incredibly good with the setting sun and broken clouds.

These are the last of my images from the Mansfield DELWP Hume Fire Bombing Base.

So far I have posted images of the Firebirds, Birddogs and Bombers, so that leaves the Helitaks. Two Kestrel Aviation aircraft, a Bell 212 and 412 were based there for the nearby fires that were out of control on the 6th of March. Unfortunately, the Coulson S-61 was away for the day but no sooner than I began beetling my way back to Melbourne I saw the support trailer drive past the opposite way! Bummer...

I am so pleased with the images that I came away with from Mansfield Base and it has certainly reignited my love for aviation photography, just a matter of getting out and doing more of it!...

It is so good to finally hear that all the Victorian fires are now under control.

First time seeing the very capable AT-802 alive and running. Not just the one but three were in action.

Wednesday the 6th of March saw quite a bit of movement out of the Mansfield DELWP Fire Bombing base. Amongst the movements, Bombers 352, 353 (Field Air) and 358 (Pays) were busy making runs out to the various fires in the region.

I have been wanting to see the unique Cessna 337 Skymaster in action for ages. On Wednesday the 6th of March, two were in and out of Mansfield, providing observation information on the nearby fire situations.

Safe to say there was a bit of a close call when a flock of Sulfur Crested Cockatoos flew through as Birddog 381 made its departure! As far as I could tell everyone, birds included made it through ok.

Air tractors and Helitack should be the next to follow on.
