I’ve found that any time I fear being unwanted, or that I’m losing friends or that no one wants to be my friend

It’s usually because of this:

“I’m obsessing over myself”

My focus changes from wanting to be a friend to others to, wanting others to be my friend.

I stop giving and start taking.

When I’m focused on giving and being there for others, all the fears of being unwanted fade away.

I used to spend so much time worrying about being alone and wondering if other’s liked me. Coming from this head-space actually made it harder to connect with people.

Then I realized I could end other people’s loneliness, by being there for them.

I’ve found that the biggest gift I can give to others is this:

Listening and accepting them. Being there for them.

When I give that gift without wanting anything in return, I have no fear of being alone or unwanted.

Sometimes I feel like giving up.

Sometimes the pain from the past is too much and I feel like hiding under the covers and never going out again.

Then how do I still function in the world?

There are 2 key things that helped me:

1. Accept the pain. Realize that life is unfair sometimes. Understand that your pain gives you unique power. The person who has to live with depression can last through hard times better than someone who doesn’t. Why? Because they already know how bad things can be.

2. Expect hard times. In my belief, human experience is made up of positive and negative emotions. It is unrealistic to think you’ll feel happy all the time. Know that today’s joy will turn into tomorrow sadness and that sadness will turn into the next day’s joy. If you know this, you won’t get carried away in your emotions.

These mental tools allow me to continue functioning and enjoying life. No matter how bad things are I always think of what I’m grateful for.

The more grateful you can be, the more hopeful of the future you’ll be.
