Anger on the plains

How good is storm season??

It’s amazing to see some rain again and lightning ⚡️ bolts flash across the sky. The pure anger in some of these storms is unbelievable and the speed at which they travel. Hope you all stayed safe today ✌🏻

Winter Cabin

It’s incredible to see all of these little cabins scattered across the Lofoten Islands. All the different shapes and colours bringing a bit of life to this winter wonderland.

Windy Times

After arriving in Iceland after 32hrs on a plane and a shorts night sleep in a camper van. I was woken up by what could only be described as a scene from Jurassic Park, there was loud screeching, the van was being shaken from side to side; I was sure I had woken up to a nightmare. I slowly opened to the door holding on as tight as possible to find that I was in one of the worst wind storms I had ever experienced. However there was so much colour in the sky I could not help myself, I quickly grabbed my camera and ran out in search of some shelter and somewhere low I could grab a shot. This little gully was the best I could find but it made for a great shot.

On this day wind gusts were recorded at 142km p/hr.

Hamnoy

I have been dreaming of arctic winter lately. Deep snow, warm fires, small red cabins and dramatic landscapes. It has been a challenging few months for me and I have not been able to work on my photography as much as I would have hoped. It’s scenes like this that remind me where my passion came from and that no matter how difficult life can be there is still beauty out there for all of us to enjoy.

Here is a little sleepy fishing village, tucked away in the Lofoten Islands.

Forest

Walking through the forests of Tasmania, admiring the gorgeous wildlife and flora that surrounded us. I can only imagine what the amazon rainforest must look like. As all too many of us already know the forests are burning at a rapid rate, coverage of the fires is minimal and the impact is devastating. We all need to make a continue effort to change and stand up for the planet as we are it’s only voice.

Could you imagine the outrage if this was happening in your backyard?

Long Nights

If only you could get a true understanding of what was involved in capturing this image on this incredible night. Temperatures were well below -30c but the forecast was for abnormal aurora conditions. The sun set at 2:27pm we hit the road at 3pm with just over 2.5 hrs worth of driving ahead and a necessary hotdog stop for good measure.

Once we arrived at our location there was the faintest hint of aurora, after a lengthly discussion around the depth of the snow we had content with and uneven terrain that snowshoes were a must. After hiking down to the hut we managed a few good images but nothing worth writing home about. We had been standing in the freezing cold for over 3 hours in anticipation for the sky to light up. I was optimistic about the forecast and the aurora had begun to die off, so I made my way back to the car and was busy removing my snow shoes when within a split second the sky lit up. Snow shoes back on with camera gear in place I raced down to the hut quicker than Usain Bolt covering the 100m sprints. I am pretty sure I set a new record for the 100m in snow shoes. This was the beginning of the next 6hrs worth of aurora, the night that just kept giving for all our hard work.

Icy Reflections

“I had been educated in the rhythms of the mountain, rhythms in which change was never fundamental, only cyclical. The same sun appeared each morning, swept over the valley, and dropped behind the peak. The snows that fell in winter always melted in the spring”

Diamonds in the rough

This is a shot I have been after for quite some time. After numerous visits to this magnificent location hoping for either a sunrise or sunset that would do this place justice; I finally managed to capture my dream image.

We jumped in the car in the pitch black freezing cold and made the 2.5 hour long drive over to black diamond beach. We could see some medium to high level clouds with a decent gap in the horizon, however I did not want to get my hopes up. Ten minutes out from our ETA a faint red glow appeared and my heartbeat began to rise. A number of questions quickly circulated through my head; Would there be icebergs on the beach, would the gap hold for long enough, how many other photographers would have the same idea and be waiting for us…

We arrived and made our way down to the waters edge to scout for a good composition. The seafront with littered with small icebergs but not too many to overcrowd the frame. I set up my tripod, composed my image and double checked all of my settings and then it happened. The sky lit up and put on the display I had hoped for.

This was the one frame that stuck with me from the morning. I hope you all enjoy.

Norway Nights

Standing out in the cold, wind biting on your face, waves crashing at your feet hoping to drag you into it’s depths. Waiting for the aurora to show its face was a common occurrence in Norway. Its amazing what you will put yourself through just to capture that perfect image.

Fantasy Island

Romantic landscapes draw you in, the touch your soul and create new memories. Dramatic skies, majestic mountains, gigantic waterfalls are all subjects that form part of these incredible scenes. Iceland has every single one of the aspects no matter where you are, around every corner there is something to stop and admire.

On this day not only had we witnessed and amazing sunrise we were treated to one of the most spectacular sunsets I have seen. The air was still the clouds were high and everyone was excited. As dusk began to fall the colours arrived with it, the mountains glowed; bathed in golden light emphasising the pastel colours. It was an evening like no other.

Tunnels of Time

Iceland is famous for its snow and ice. In fact Iceland is home to a number of large glaciers which many tourists are able to see up close and personal. What most people don’t know is that these natural air conditioners are slowly disappearing at a rate of around 0.2% annually which equates to around 20-30km’s of glacier ice every year. On this day we started our climb up the glacier and we were all dumb struck by the beauty and clarity of the ice as our crampons etched their way in with each passing step. You could hear all the chatter about how many millions of years worth of history we were walking on, catching glimpses or volcanic eruptions of years gone past frozen in time below our feet. Some even wondered if they would see frozen creatures from the ice age. The sad thing is due to climate change these magnificent landmarks are retreating faster than even before. Our guide explained that in twelve months they had already seen the glacier retreat 50M.

How much longer will it take for us to realise the impact we have on this planet?

I would like to thank Local Guides for allowing us to experience this amazing location.

Cracks in the ice

On our recent trip to Norway we were were spoilt with a variety of amazing sunrises and sunsets. On this particular morning no one was disappointed. The high cloud rolled in and the tide was right to capture the Ice Flowers. We noticed the faintest of red glows beginning to appear on the horizon, the group began to get excited while each person sort out their perfect composition. As predicted the sky filled with beautiful pastel colours and Norways breath taking landscapes did the rest.
The phenomenon occurs when the water freezes above the rocks in a shallow bay and as the tide recedes the rocks break through the ice and an Ice Flower is formed.
