I spend a lot of time photographing families and I’ve become increasingly convinced that children don’t overly mind what the activity is.

Park. Backyard. Bedroom. Kitchen floor.

As long as somebody is willing to join in, they’re usually having the time of their life.

A photoshoot should not feel like an endurance sport.

A few nerves? Completely normal.

Spending the entire session wondering if everything is going horribly wrong? Less ideal.

One of my hot takes as a photographer is that clients should feel safe, relaxed and like someone has the situation under control.

Seems logical to me?

Swipe.

Children have a remarkable ability to turn a perfectly normal walk into an expedition.

A pinecone needs investigating.
A stick needs collecting.
Some leaves need carrying for reasons that remain unclear (to us boring adults).

And suddenly we’ve spent half an hour investigating Very Important Forest Business and somehow ended up with a gallery full of photos.

Works every bloody time.

The kid who refused to be photographed? Asking for more photos by the end. 📸
That’s kind of the whole job summed up in one sentence.
Real families. Real chaos. Real moments that actually look like you.

Children are fascinating.

They can spend 45 minutes completely absorbed in a game involving three toy cars, a kitchen chair and a set of rules that absolutely no one else knows, but are intricate and completely obvious to them.

Meanwhile I’ll inevitably stick my foot in it by not understanding that OBVIOUSLY the blue car can’t be involved because it’s a Porsche and they don’t drive like that.

I love being humbled by kids, and I love shoots that start with cups of tea, chats and hanging out amongst very important collections.

May Wrapped 💖
A baby turning 17, a toxic laptop situationship, heated blankets at the office, and a child who scalped her bath mermaids. Just a normal month in my life. Swipe for the full chaos.

I think people assume newborn photos require everyone to have their s**t together.

Meanwhile most families are running on three hours of sleep, eating toast over the sink and trying to remember what day it is.

Which is exactly why I love photographing this stage.
It’s such a weird little season of life.

One minute you’re staring at a tiny human wondering how they fit inside you. The next you’re discussing p**p colours with alarming enthusiasm and celebrating the fact everyone got dressed before midday.

It’s messy. It’s exhausting. It’s funny. And that newborn squish gets me every time.

Okay but can we talk about how no two days are the same in this job? 📸

One week I’m sitting cross-legged in the dirt getting a very serious explanation about somebody’s stick collection, and the next I’m photographing a stunning vintage blue BMW that looks like it belongs in a film.

This is genuinely why I love what I do.

The variety. The people. The fact that I never really know what’s waiting for me next week.

One day it’s backyard adventures and trampoline negotiations. The next it’s this absolute beauty.

This car. This light. What a hoot!

The other day I asked a parent if I could hold their child’s hand during a session.

They were genuinely surprised I’d asked.

Meanwhile I was surprised they were surprised.

Swipe for a photography hot take that definitely shouldn’t be a hot take.
