The "Chicken Coupe" XA GT Falcon.

In June 1972, the front page story of the Sun-Herald got pulled at the last minute and the gap needed to be filled. Evan Green's article captioned “Bullets on wheels” was chosen as the replacement. Retrospectively, the piece probably would have been glossed over if found on page five. As history shows, it garnered immense attention when it became front-page news. The government, fearful of the ramifications of the general public being able to buy 160+mph cars, reached out to manufacturers telling them to kill off their muscle cars or they would take their fleet buying elsewhere... Bringing the Australian muscle car industry to a screaming halt… At least for a year or two. Ford Australia was left with a parts bin of stock intended for the Phase lV HO XA GT code-named RPO83.

In July 2020 an anonymous South Australian car collector paid $300,909 for the legendary, 1973 XA GT RPO83, "Chicken Coupe" falcon. There were only 250 RPO’s built back in the day, but the unique optioning of the "Chicken Coupe" makes this a one-of-one. The original owner paid $7,000 new, plus trading in his XP falcon.

As it was pulled from the coupe, the Falcon was reasonably straight but rough,…very rough. Covered in thirty-two years of detritus, and rat droppings from being parked in an actual chicken coupe. This is a one-owner, Queensland car which came fully optioned and still complete in its original factory spec. It has a 351, top-loader four-speed, HM headers, Detroit locker diff, power windows, power steering, air con, tinted glass, intermittent wipers and an aluminium rear spoiler.

Finch Restorations have been tasked with the ground-up restoration of this unique piece of Australian automotive history. The body has had all of the panels removed, including the roof skin and work is well underway to repair or replace virtually every panel. Over the years, rust has taken out the better half of the back of the car and currently, Troy at Finch is expertly recreating a new boot floor.

With the car in such a graphic state, we felt it was a good chance to capture its skeletal form. Even with a third of the shape missing, it’s still easy to guess it's a 70’s Falcon Coupe.

Stay tuned for more progress.

This levitating FJ40 image was from Andy Rasheed's (Eyefood photography) very first shoot in the Finch Studio's black wall photographic studio. Shooting this disassembled Toyota FJ40 created a number of unique opportunities for Andy.

"There is something beautiful about utility when the facility of the object dictates the design language" said Andy. Over the years Andy has come to admire the FJ’s design in all of its functional boxiness.

The FJ40 components were beautifully refinished in high gloss by Finch Restorations and, even in pieces, most people would be able to guess what the complete car might be.

The FJ40's owner is passionately undertaking his own restoration project and commissioned Finch Restorations to support his project by repairing and refinishing the FJ40's chassis and body, and body components.

Many thanks to David Copperfield for his elevation work whilst Andy went about his art …

Monroe Australia commissioned Eyefood photography to photograph four cars that feature Monroe suspension parts as original equipment.

Each car was shot individually and then composited with an existing image of a truck. Monroe used the image as part of their marketing presence at a trade show in Thailand last week.

The layout was masterfully handled by Heath Riggs at Mono and the shoot took place in the blackwall studio at Finch Studio in Mt Barker.

Finch Studio is a premium automotive photographic studio, created as a wonderful collaboration between renowned Adelaide Hills photographer Andy Rasheed, and Finch Restorations the renowned Adelaide Hills vehicle restorers.

It is an inspirational studio where classic cars and motorcycles can be professionally photographed in a blackwall space.

Particularly suited to sophisticated advertising clients, enthusiasts, and collectors that want exquisite images to show off their vehicle at its best!

To showcase the Finch Studio, we are pleased to present this photoshoot by Andy of a 1976 Morgan Plus 8 Sports Lightweight restored by Finch Restorations.

The Morgan Plus 8 is a beautiful two-seater open tourer originally built by the British car makers from 1968 to 2004. For decades, it was the fastest-accelerating British production car. Plus 8s were successful in competition, and won the 1978 and 1979 Production Sports Car Championships.

Between 1976 and 1977, Morgan built only nineteen very special 'Sports Lightweight' models, sometimes called 'Super Light'.

Today, the Morgan Plus 8 remains one of the most exciting of all Morgans, with the Super Lights at the pinnacle.

Andy Rasheed has expertly captured the magnificent results of the superb ground-up restoration on this Morgan Plus 8 Sports Lightweight by Finch Restorations. The Australian Morgan community is beginning to notice this car and describing it as the best Morgan in the country.
