It began with word of mouth and a woman carrying three manuscripts and a dream gown waiting to be created.
When I arrived at Jodi’s studio, I expected to meet an author preparing for a book launch. Instead, I met a storyteller shaped by courage, compassion, and the quiet wisdom of therapy dogs. As she spoke about her children’s books, she didn’t just describe dogs. She described healers with bright, knowing eyes.
At the first fitting, between measurements and laughter, I began to understand the world she had built. Benni, her remarkable therapy dog, is steady, gentle, and wise. For years, she has stood beside Jodi, helping children and adults discover that comfort sometimes arrives on four paws.
By the second fitting, as the fabric began to move with purpose, Jodi shared the heart behind her second book. Bella, who belonged to her mother Susanne, grieved deeply when Susanne passed. Yet in her sorrow, Bella became a quiet guide for others navigating loss. A grieving dog helping others through grief.
Her third book, her own life story, sat quietly in the background of our conversations. The bravest story of all. The one where she is not just the author, but the heroine who has walked alongside grief, healing, animals, children, and hope.
The gown evolved into more than something to wear. It became a tribute. Benni’s spirit was woven softly into the design, strength and softness stitched into every seam.
On launch day, when Jodi stepped into her gown, she was luminous. Not simply because of the fabric, but because she was wearing her story.
And it was an honour to help her dress for it.
