So there's this thing happening with the sun next month, I thought I should get some practice in taking photos of it.

This is a single image shot on my Olympus EM5Mk2 with ye olde Tamron 500mm f8 mirror lens, protected with some Baader solar film. Sharpening and contrast in photoshop. Focus is very trifficult on this lens.

NEVER take a photo of the sun with a telephoto lens without the proper filters and protection.

The other weekend was our local Astrofest and (a surprise to me) I won the award for best astro photo from a mobile phone 😮. I also had my Sugarloaf Rock photo printed for exhibition.

Large Magellanic Cloud in RGBHa
Plus bonus starless LeNhance image

The Large Magellanic Cloud is a satellite irregular galaxy to our own Milky Way galaxy. It is around 160,000 light years away from us and is a prominent feature in the southern hemisphere sky. It contains the Tarantula Nebula, the most active star forming region in the local group, visible to the naked eye even though it's in another galaxy.

This image is about 1hr of data from a Canon 6Da without a filter and another hour of data using an Optolong LeNhance filter. I used starnet++ to remove the stars and combined the red channel with the unfiltered image. The 2nd image is just the starless LeNhance data, I thought that looked pretty interesting.

Venuset at Sugarloaf Rock

A few weeks ago I went camping with my family in Yallingup. I checked Sky Safari and found that Venus would be setting near the Milky Way and would be perfectly placed above Sugarloaf. The cloud forecast during the trip was... not great. The night I went out the cloud cleared a little, I think this small amount of cloud adds to the image. This is a pano f 19 images

The Eagle and Omega

We had some clear sky at the end of last week so I headed out to Serpentine Dam on Friday night to get away from the city light. I wanted to use the Askar again, tho I wasn't sure what I wanted to image. I decided to try the area around the Eagle Nebula as I'd never shot this area of sly before. Turns out it is quite beautiful with all the dark nebulae and those 2 bight emission clouds standing out. This was the first time I used Sharpcap to do polar alignment, it was defiantly better than the old compass and inclinometer method I had been using. I had some problems with Magic Lantern and bulb mode on my 6D, so these are only 30 second subs.

The Complex Clouds of Rho Ophiuchi

About a month ago I bought a new telescope 😮 A tiny little 40mm apo called an Askar FMA 180. Unfortunalty we are in the middle of this "Negative Indian Ocean Dipole" which makes the weather pretty "negative" all round... 😢 I took the data for this image when we were packing up a camping trip to leave before some pretty serious weather hit. This is the first decent image from the scope, it's been a while since I've posted on FB so thought I would share it here. There are some other images from this scope on my insta (instagram.com/lukebusellato). I couldn't get my polar alignment working very well so I gave up trying and shortened my exposure to 20 seconds. Processed with Siril, Starnet and Photoshop

Lake Clifton Astro 360

A few weeks ago I went out to Lake Clifton with my friend Peter. It was a wonderful clear night and we were the only ones at the lake. Last time I was here literally every man and his dog was here. Lake Clifton is the first place I tried to shoot a 360 astro pano, before I even had a proper 360 head. It was.. not great, but it still looked amazing to me. You can still find that old pano in google maps. I have tried several times to get another better pano here but there was always some problem, clouds or moon or too many people. This time everything worked out and I finished shooting just as the moon was rising.

I went out last night with a friend to Lake Clifton. It's been about 6 months since I've been out to shoot astro. Thankfully it was a clear night and we were the only people at the lake. I've been wanting to try some landscape astro with my phone since I got it last year. Both these images were taken and edited on my Samsung Australia Note 20 Ultra.

World Photography Day

Here's a photo of the Milky Way rising behind Bluff Knoll. I find it really difficult to photograph this mountain at night, its just so dark. The foreground is a single 10min exposure (with 4 darks) and it's still dark and noisy. Anyway please enjoy 😃
