A University of Newcastle study into PFAS exposure found the pollutants reduced s***m production in mice and caused genetic changes that could affect offspring.
It was the first study to conduct tests with PFAS levels equivalent to those detected in Williamtown.
, who co-led the study, said “the chemicals we used were similar to those in non-stick cookware and firefighting foam”.
“We showed that 12 weeks of PFAS exposure led to a significant drop in the male s*x hormones of these animals,” Dr Martin said.
“Testosterone and dihydrotestosterone decreased. Both these hormones play key roles in fertility and overall health.” The study, published in Communications Biology on Tuesday night, used PFAS levels that matched those found in groundwater from a monitoring well in the Williamtown contamination zone.
Its release follows the 10-year anniversary of the contamination at Williamtown being made public.
Dr Martin said the PFAS exposure “lowered the number of s***m these animals were producing on a day-to-day basis”.
“This was probably because of the reductions in hormone levels,” she said. Story by full story ***m
