๐๐๐ ๐พ๐ค๐ก๐ค๐ฃ๐๐๐ก ๐๐ช๐๐๐ง ๐๐๐๐๐ฃ๐๐ง๐ฎ (๐พ๐๐) (Pictured Centre Left) complex was built in 1891 on the Glanville side of the Port River. It sat directly opposite the main Port Adelaide wharves.Industrial Giant: For exactly a century, it manufactured refined sugar, treacle, and golden syrup. It primarily supplied South Australian and Western Australian markets.The Great Fire: In 1926, a massive fire virtually destroyed the refinery. Showing immense industrial speed, workers rebuilt it entirely within six months.Transportation Hub: The area was heavily serviced by transport. Electric trams ran through Port Adelaide between 1917 and 1935. Train tracks ran right down the centre of local streets to load cargo directly from ships.The End of an Era: The iconic complex closed in 1991. It was completely demolished two years later in 1993 to pave the way for the Newport Quays waterfront redevelopment.|
๐๐ก๐๐ฉ๐๐๐๐งโ๐จ ๐๐ก๐๐ฅ (Pictured In Background) at Birkenhead is South Australia's oldest commercial slipway, built between 1849 and 1851 by Scottish shipwright Henry Cruikshank Fletcher. The site grew into a vital maritime hub, expanding in 1867 with the steam-powered Dunnikier Slip to service 2,000-ton vessels. After operating under various owners through the 20th century, commercial shipbuilding wound down and closed by 1973. Now listed on the South Australian Heritage Register, the historic industrial site has been transformed by developer Cedar Woods into a modern residential community that integrates new townhouses with preserved boat slips and maritime artifact displays.
