Today we move in to our home for the next week, Victoria Hall, and start putting every last detail in place for "Le Cercle des illusionnistes" - from the lighting and backdrops to lots of little props.

One favourite touch is the 1890s French newspaper replica thanks to the professional printer in our team - merci Pierre! (He and SIGN UP PERTH are to thank for the posters around town too.)

🎭 MEET THE CAST 🎭

This is Valentine. She's from the Netherlands and moved to Perth when she was 12. Thanks to having a French grandmother and spending many family holidays in France, as well as living in Paris as a student for a few years in her 20s, she speaks excellent French as well as Dutch and English. She's now a paintings conservator, curator and collections manager.

She's returned to PFT this year after being involved in our production of Notre Dame de Paris in 2018. "My main motivation to be part of this wonderful dynamic group is being able to play, explore and let go of inhibitions that we all create in our routine lives. As an adult I find this extremely valuable. Of course it is also a great platform to keep practicing the language."

In "Le Cercle des illusionnistes" she's playing Margot, second wife of the 19th-century magician Jean-Eugène Robert-Houdin. "I love the fact that she is a believer! A believer that anything is possible. She encourages and pushes Jean to follow his dreams."

Valentine recommends coming to see the play because "Everyone could do with a little magic."

🎭 MEET THE CAST 🎭

This is Michèle. She came to Australia from France in 1985 as a teaching assistant and ended up marrying an Australian. She's now a professional translator and enjoys learning Italian.

Michèle joined PFT in 2019 after hearing about us and deciding it was time to join a French group after all those years in Australia. She's playing several roles in "Le Cercle des illusionnistes".

"I keep in mind that each part is a small cog in the machine and makes the story happen," she said.

"This play is so intricate and so well crafted. It will be an absolute gem and very entertaining."

🎭 MEET THE CAST 🎭

This is Madge. She's a Perth local who started learning French in high school and kept going. She's also studied a bit of Italian, Thai, Esperanto and Indonesian, and keeps busy with working as a traffic engineer, studying nutrition at ECU, running and writing (she recently finished a vampire romance novel).

She got involved in Perth French Theatre in 2018 because she's always loved performing and thought it seemed like a great way to improve her French.

In "Le Cercle des illusionnistes" she's playing an exuberant 19th-century travelling magician, Antonia. "Antonia is enigmatic, she spends a lot of time observing things. I feel like she's the sort of woman from history who wasn't satisfied with the options available for her, so she decided to do something about it."

She thinks seeing this play will be a unique experience. "Even if you don't speak any French at all, it's absolutely incomparable to anything else you'll see in Perth: it's like watching a live foreign film, complete with subtitles! As for the play itself, iIt's funny, the acting is excellent, and it weaves together a lot of different characters and time periods in telling the story. "

🎭 MEET THE CAST 🎭

This is Caroline. She was born in the Loire Valley, grew up in Paris and moved to Perth 16 years ago with her husband and two kids for adventure and sunshine. She also speaks Italian and Japanese, and is a French teacher and artist (check out her painting and workshops at Caroline Muscat).

She joined Perth French Theatre this year because she'd seen six of our previous plays, loved them and dreamed of challenging herself.

In "Le Cercle des illusionnistes" you'll see her playing Catherine, wife of a wealthy shoemaker and mother of Georges Méliès. "She and her husband have dedicated all their life to boots," explains Caro. "She likes dancing, laughing and going to parties. I love being on stage as Catherine, trying to make her alive and moving for the audience."

And why should you come to see this show? "It’s an entertaining play, with magic, love and action, and with an insight into the beginnings of cinema."
