The Pleiades (M45) is an open star cluster around 444 light years away. The cluster is dominated by hot blue stars that have formed within the last 100 million years.

Both Greek and Indigenous Australian mythology refer to the seven main stars as sisters, with the Greek seeing them as the seven daughters of Atlas, while the Indigenous Australians see them as seven sisters who escaped into the sky to avoid being chased.

This image was taken from the Astronomical Society of Western Australia's dark sky site in North Tammin.

Lagoon and Trifid Nebulae in HaRGB

The Lagoon and Trifid Nebulae are HII emission nebulae located around 4,000 light years away. This image is the product of about 3 months of dodging the clouds and rain of a very wet winter in Perth.

This is my first image using the Sky-Watcher Australia Wave 150i Strain Wave mount, and it performed amazingly. The guiding numbers were steady and twice as good as my previous NEQ6 mount.

Orion's Belt is one of the most well known group of stars in the night sky. It's made up of three bright stars - Alnitak, Alnilam and Mintaka. Alnitak and Alnilam are both blue supergiants, located 1,260 and 2,000 lightyears away respectively. Mintaka is a binary star system located about 1,200 light years away.

This image shows the nebulosity around Orion's Belt that cannot be seen with naked eye. The large nebulosity to the right of Alnitak is home to the Horsehead nebula, a dark nebula which resembles the shape of a horse's head against the bright background of glowing as. The Flame nebula, just below Alnitak, glows in Fiery orange and red tones due to ultraviolet light from nearby stars ionizing the surrounding gas.

The second image shows the RedCat51 telescope acquiring the data used for this image. Orion's Belt is visible as the three horizontal stars to the top right of the Orion label.

A great weekend away at the Neergabby Star Party organized by the Gravity Discovery Centre and Observatory.

The staff from the GDC brought along a collection of telescopes and gave us a great night sky tour.

Meanwhile my astrophotography rig was being protected from the elements by one the amazing Starpoint Australis Octans tent prototypes. Guiding was amazing as the scope was protected from the wind, with the roof cover being used during the day to protect from the sun. Can't wait to grab one of these in the next few months to take on every dark sky trip!

B*W 56 is a molecular cloud located in the Gum nebula. It's structure is formed of many Cometary Globules, thought to be formed from a nearby supernova shockwave which compresses the head of the cloud and forces material away to form the tail.

Thor's Helmet (NGC 2359, Sharpless 2-298, Gum-4) is an emission nebula located nearly 12,000 light years away in Canis Major. The central star, WR7, is a Wolf-Rayet star - a rare set of stars that have fused most of their hydrogen and contain a large amount of heavy elements, giving them a much higher surface temperature than most other stars (20,000 - 210,000K).

WR7 is in a pre-supernova stage, throwing off huge amounts of gases pushed by its strong stellar winds, giving the bubble like appearance of the nebula.

This image was taken over two nights from Bortle 6 skies in Perth, Western Australia using narrowband filters, with RGB filters used to capture the star colour.

The Tarantula Nebula is the largest known star forming region in the local universe. Despite being located in another galaxy - the Large Magellanic Cloud - and being around 170,000 light years away, it is clearly visible to the naked eye from dark skies.

This is a 2 panel mosaic imaged from Bortle 6 skies in Perth, Western Australia. The intense windy nights of a typical Perth summer night meant quite a few subs had to be discarded.

NGC253 is a nearly side on galaxy location approximately 11 million light years away. It's a popular target for southern skies as it's one of the brightest visible galaxies.
