Have you ever considered a trip to the remote South West of Tasmania? Or, have you no idea of what the area has to offer?

Well, whether you are considering a trip, know nothing about the area, or would just like to spend an hour or so looking at some nice photos, we would like to invite you to join us for a free webinar all about this remarkable area.

It is incredibly remote, has some amazing scenery, and an extremely rare bird calls it home. There are no roads here, but there are waterways. It has few structures but it has a lot of history, and you can still get a damn good meal.

Find out why South West Tasmania is so special, and why this is not just a tour, but a real adventure โ€ฆ.

The Mite, the Ootheca and the โ€ฆ. ๐Ÿค”

Mites arenโ€™t known for being very big, though as mites go, this one (a red velvet mite species) was a good size. Oothecae (cockroach egg sacks) are a reasonable size as far as egg sacks go, but again arenโ€™t huge.

The third thing in this photo on the other hand, the brown spec at the end of the leaf, was so absolutely tiny that I didnโ€™t even register it at the time. I thought it was just that, a spec of dust or such like. Viewed on a computer screen, however, it is definitely an invertebrate something (though what that something might be, I have no idea).

Our mite friend here is about to have a dinner of cockroach eggs. The adults feed on other small invertebrates and their eggs, unlike red spider mites which feed on plants. Young velvet mites are parasitic on other multi-legged things.

I managed to do a new blog post๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป. First one for ages. It took a while, and I waffle a bit no doubt, but it covers a few of the surprises from the first 12months in my new role as a photo workshop assistant. Mostly good surprises. One not so much.

Surprises from a first year as a photography workshop assistant after making a career change.

.Tiny Hero

When I took this one I was just trying to photograph a small jumping spider on a fence railing. On reviewing it though, it reminded me of a character in some sort of futuristic/ sci-fi type movie.

Here our hero, a small jumping spider, is moving through some abandoned industrial building, or creeping through the bowels of a deep space space-station, ever on the look out for the aliens/baddies ๐Ÿ‘€๐ŸŽฌ

Maybe I should get out more ๐Ÿค”

Masquerade

Many spiders are very definitely spider-shaped. Many are not, including this cryptic little one pretending to be a twig, with the shape of its abdomen giving the impression of a broken bit of branch.

During the day they stay nestled up to the branch, usually blending in perfectly.

This one was spotted whilst out with and on a night stalk, with its eye shine giving it away I think.

I havenโ€™t done a book review on my website for a little while, but that is about to be amended. There is one incoming, a book I both love and am frustrated with at the same time (but I could also be expecting too much ๐Ÿค”). And then look what the nice postie dropped off yesterday! ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿป Looking forward to getting stuck into these ๐Ÿ˜€

Pest Control

A Braconid wasp, one of over 800 species found in Australia, all of who parasitise the larvae or adults of other insects.

Many species play an important role in the natural control of pests species such as aphids.

This one was happily sat on a tree trunk, seeming doing nothing much at all, though I am sure there were wasp-things a-play.
