Before Kmart became bright, clean and weirdly quiet, it had Holly’s Café sitting inside like a little reward zone for surviving a family shopping trip.

It was the place parents stopped for coffee, kids got chips or a milkshake, and everyone pretended they weren’t absolutely cooked from wandering through homewares for 45 minutes. The orange booths, the tray meals, the old-school menu boards... it was proper suburban Australia.

The last Holly’s reportedly closed in 2010, but Aussies still talk about it like it was a national institution. For a café inside Kmart, it somehow left a bigger cultural footprint than half the food chains that still exist.
