A fascinating look into open cut gold mining deep within the remote Goldfields of Western Australia.

I find this type of subject matter a little removed from my usual abstract work, where I can often control the narrative a bit more through composition and perspective. The opportunity to document these vast open pits from the air, however, was an extremely rare one and something I couldn’t pass up.

As I move further through my journey in aerial photography, I find myself increasingly drawn to opening up regions like this to people. Many of these places are rarely seen by the public, yet they form a significant part of the Australian landscape and economy. There is something fascinating about seeing the scale of these operations from above and gaining a perspective that simply isn’t possible from the ground.

Feel free to zoom in and have a look around. This series is full of small details, from haul trucks and winding access roads to the incredible colours and geology exposed by decades of mining activity. I enjoy imagery that allows the viewer to dig a little deeper and discover their own points of interest within the frame.

With gold prices skyrocketing, this region is a hive of activity at the moment 🙏

I’ve spent a fair bit of time out in the more remote parts of the Goldfields this year, often finding myself hundreds of kilometres from the nearest town, exploring landscapes that are incredibly difficult to access.

The tailings ponds and processing areas scattered throughout these mining regions are unlike anything else I’ve photographed in Western Australia. From the air they feel almost extraterrestrial, vast networks of colours, textures and patterns that seem more at home on another planet than right here in our own backyard.

While these locations often spark conversations around industry and environmental impact, as a photographer I’m continually fascinated by the visual complexity they create. Every flight reveals something different, and it’s that sense of discovery that keeps drawing me back out into the middle of nowhere 🙏

If you’d like to join me, this year is soldout bar a couple of spots but 2027 has group and custom tours available 🙏

In the last decade I’ve found a huge amount of enjoyment exploring the salt lakes of the Mid Central Wheatbelt. A lot of that work has focused on the smaller little “egg” lakes and colourful paint pots that seem to pop up everywhere out there, but the larger lakes can be just as fascinating. They change so dramatically from season to season that sometimes it feels like you’re photographing a completely different location each time you visit.

For me, that’s part of the magic of aerial photography. Once you get above these landscapes, the possibilities are endless. Shapes, textures and patterns begin to emerge, and often the only limiting factors are your imagination, battery life, or a curious bird taking a little too much interest in the drone.

This particular lake, located near Southern Cross W.A, was one of my favourite discoveries of recent years 🙏🙏🙏

If you’d like to join us chasing and shooting these lakes we’ve got one spot left on our Kalgoorlie, Lefroy and Salt Lakes tour for 2027 🙏

I’ve been lucky enough to spend the last almost three weeks exploring the beautiful South Island of New Zealand, with 8 of those days dedicated to running our 2026 New Zealand ground and aerial photography tour alongside the talented Mr Hoelen 🙏

Honestly, we couldn’t have asked for a better crew. Every single one of the participants put in the miles, the hikes and the effort needed to create some truly special imagery. Some locations were well known, others a little more off the beaten track, but hey… when in Rome (or NZ) 🤙

From loading all 9 of us into an Air Caravan and flying over the braided rivers, to doors off flights in a Hughes 500 around Fox Glacier and Franz Josef, mixed in with countless incredible ground-based locations, it turned into a pretty unforgettable adventure.

One of the biggest goals Paul and I had with this workshop was to make sure it never felt robotic or overly regimented. We wanted it to feel like genuine exploration, sharing the excitement and feeling we both still get from aerial photography and discovering landscapes from above. I’d dare say we pulled that off.

During the workshop a lot of my focus naturally went into helping and guiding the crew, but before and after the tour I managed to spend a little time soaking in some scenes for myself as well. Below is just a small selection of images from the trip, all captured on the Nikon Z8 but edited entirely on my iPhone using Lightroom Mobile, which blows my mind how advanced the mobile version is becoming!

If you’d like to join us in 2027, jump onto my website via the link in my bio, head to the 2027 Workshops section and have a look. We’re already starting to fill spots, with a maximum group size of just 6 people.

Hopefully we’ll see you over here next year 🙏

Deep out in the remote goldfields of Western Australia sits this gold mine tailings pond, and honestly, it was one of the strangest things I’ve photographed in a long time. Most tailings ponds carry a certain weight when you shoot them, knowing what they are and what they represent, but this particular one felt almost surreal from above.

The colours alone looked completely alien, a palette of deep blues, soft golds, pale creams and toxic pinks. But the longer I hovered over it, the weirder it became. Shapes and figures started appearing everywhere. In the first image I could see what looked like a woman in a flowing dress with hair blowing behind her, while the second had this strange rat-like figure emerging through the darker tones. Even parts of the series looked like distorted cats or creatures half hidden beneath the surface textures.

It turned into one of those shoots where your brain keeps trying to make sense of what it’s seeing. One of the more unique and mind bending aerial subjects I’ve come across in a while 🤙

The Goldfields, Western Australia. This series hit me particularly hard due to the nature of the subject and how vividly, at least to me, it resembles a petrified forest trying to emerge from the snow white leftovers of the gold tailings process. Finding these intricate, twisted tree-like structures curling and pushing out from the depths gave the whole scene an almost haunting feeling, pretty gnarly stuff.

I’ve just completed around 8500kms over 16 days running a mix of photographic tours and workshops across remote Western Australia. It was an insanely rewarding experience meeting both new and returning clients, guiding people deep into the outback and into some truly unique aerial locations.

Feeling very lucky to call this my job 🙏

If you’d like to join us in 2027, just drop me a DM or visit my website 👊

Just wrapped up around 16 days on the road non stop, across one custom photographic tour and our Kalgoorlie, Lefroy and Salt Lakes workshop for 2026. Somewhere around 8500km covered, countless images created by all the amazing clients involved, and a stack of memories I won’t forget anytime soon.

It’s honestly such a privilege to call this my job. The people I get to meet along the way, the conversations, the shared obsession with creativity and exploration, it constantly leaves me inspired 🙏

This is just a small collection of behind the scenes moments from various stops along the journey. I’ll start sharing some of the actual imagery from the trip over the coming weeks, there’s some pretty wild stuff in there 👊

Big shoutout to Paul Hoelen for teaming up and running the KLW leg of the trip with me, you’re an absolute weapon mate.

If you’d like to join us in 2027, our May workshop has now sold out, but due to the demand Paul and I are opening a second departure. Just reach out or check out my website if you’re interested 👊

This series explores the tailings left behind from gold processing across Western Australia’s Goldfields.

One of these ponds, while visually striking, has a hidden detail that doesn’t reveal itself straight away, a fine steel mesh stretched across the surface, visible in images 1, 2, 5 and 6 (have a zoom). At first it feels out of place, almost like a glitch in the image, but the reason behind it is far more confronting.

That mesh is there to stop birds from landing on the water. These tailings ponds can contain highly toxic residues, including chemicals used in the extraction process, and even brief contact can be dangerous.

It makes you pause for a moment and wonder just how harsh these environments really are beneath the surface.
