It starts with a simple look.
The teacher’s hand was always firm.
The look was enough to scare you.
We never thought to talk back.
Respect was not an option then.
It was taught every single day.
My hands would always shake.
I knew where I was going.
The long walk to his office.
His door was heavy and dark.
It made a sound when it opened.
And there he stood with the board.
My throat always went dry.
There were no modern emails then.
There were just direct consequences.
I survived that principal’s office.
It shaped who I am today.
That was the world we lived in.
They don’t make them like that.
I will never forget those days.
