Love this!
’Twas the night before States, when all through the grounds,
Not a horse was stirring, not even with sounds;
The rosettes were hung by the arena with care,
While riders checked twice that they’d packed everything there.
The jackets were ready, the saddles were clean,
The plaits had been finished — the best they had been;
The coffee was brewing, the alarms set for four,
For everyone knew they’d be needing much more.
The warm-up was filling, the tension was high,
As riders went past with a nervous-looking eye;
“Was that my test?”
“No, that’s FEI!”
The judges sat ready, scribes with pencils in hand,
While stewards kept order exactly as planned;
The bell gave a ring and the first rider came,
Hoping for sevens and not too much shame.
Into the arena they proudly would ride,
With nerves tucked away and their team at their side;
A square halt, straight centreline, movements precise—
And quietly hoping the horse would behave nice!
But through all the panic, the coffee and cheer,
The volunteers worked to make States run each year;
The judges, officials, sponsors and crew,
And all of the helpers who know what to do.
Then came presentations, with ribbons displayed,
Champions smiling and photos all made;
The trophies were polished, the winners stood tall,
While exhausted competitors wondered if they’d slept at all
For 2026 is the Year of the Horse,
And WA States is the place, of course;
From ponies and youngsters to FEI stars,
With riders and horses arriving from near and far.
So saddle up proudly and give it your best,
Check your number — and don't lose your test!
Bring plenty of coffee, your smile and your gear,
And welcome to States — the best weekend of the year!
