As promised in the last post, there was a lot more to the leopard photo. While driving around Chobe National Park, we came across a impala hanging from a tree. Our driver told us only one animal would do that to its kill. Sure enough, a leopard jumped up out of the grass and climbed up. Solitary leopards can't defend a kill from a pack of hyenas or lions so their best bet is to drag it up into a tree- not easy when the impala is bigger than you are! The driver told us the leopard will eat the lower parts of the kill and when it is lighter, will pull it up further. We came back early the next morning and, sure enough, the impala's lower abdomen and back legs had been eaten away and the rest of it was now hanging from a much higher branch. The leopard tried to pull the impala further into the tree but lost its grip and it fell to the ground. The leopard climbed down to the ground to try the whole thing again.

Foe a leopard, making a kill is not the end of it as it now has to defend it. The hard work is just starting!

I got back from Botswana just over a week ago and have started the massive job of sorting through all the photos of what was an incredible trip. Chobe National Park was a real highlight. Everyone talks about the Big Five animals to see in Africa: lions, elephants, leopards, buffaloes and rhinos. In Chobe, we saw four in one day, along with much, much more.

There is also a whole other story behind the leopard photo, but that will have to be for another post.

Caspian Terns on the South Perth foreshore. They are cool looking birds with their black caps, bright red beaks and white feathers, looking a bit like an 80s glam rock band!
