I’ve been a professional photographer for over 30 years. I shot on film for the first 10 years. I always worked in photo labs during this time so I could print my own work. It allowed me to have creative control over my work. I also enjoyed the actual work. I do miss the tactile nature of film and expectation while waiting for your image to develop. This is an early print for a commercial client.

I always like to photograph something in a way that is a little bit different. I took this image at an event in the food preparation area. I used on camera flash and a fast shutter speed. This ensured the sugar was not too blurred and contrasted against a dark background. It often pays to think outside the box, as it can help with the creative process.

As photographers we photograph what catches our eye. One of the most important questions you should ask yourself is why. Why do I want to take a photo of whatever has caught your eye. Once you know the why, that will guide you to the how. There are 101 ways to photograph anything. So be guided by the why. These are a few roses from our garden on our outdoor table that we painted our-selves. I like the juxtaposition of the classic red rose against the table that we painted.
