My first job out of uni was as a graphic designer in the art room of Xpress magazine, Perth’s first street press. As a baby designer it was a crazy first gig, entering a microcosm of industry characters and frenetic activity, with a weekly print deadline. The publication was the pulse of everything music, arts, fashion and lifestyle happening in Perth. It was a lifeline for creative locals pre internet. Also, at 21, I can wholeheartedly say I milked the free ticket privileges that came with the job!! It ran in print for 31 years until the internet came along… but thankfully it continues online. It was nostalgic to document the launch of the 41st anniversary exhibition at the State Library of WA. Familiar legends behind the mag shared stories and Abby May serenaded the crowd. I feel privileged have been connected to the story of the mag, and grateful that SLWA holds records of the mag. The exhibition, curated by music editor Bob Gordon runs until Nov 30.
