This is one of the images from our recent Wild Things Collective exhibition. An echidna from Dryandra Woodlands (cropped so I didn't get too close to the animal). This one was looking out at me from a hollow log, the dark inside of the log allowing for a low key style background to the shot.

A pied oystercatcher catches a meal at the Mandurah estuary. I love how the high key really makes the graphic colours of this bird pop.

A stunning Sacred Kingfisher with its morning catch. Living in Darwin I used to see kingfishers all the time, but they are much less common here in WA so I was so happy to see this one down at Goegrup Lake.

My weekend visit to Dryandra did not yield any numbat sightings, but I did have my best encounter yet with a Western Australian bobtail. Bobtails, also known as stumpy tails or shinglebacks, are found in many parts of Australia but are usually fairly uniform in colour. In parts of WA, however, there exists a subspecies with a yellow/orange head, making them just a bit more stylish.

Female numbats give birth to tiny babies around January, carrying them on their teats for the first six or so months, until they start to get too big and heavy. Around this time of year, the babies are deposited in a burrow, insulated by leaves, bark and grass collected by the mother. By spring the babies will start to spend time outside the burrow entrance, until finally in summer they become fully independent and disperse to find their own territories.

I'm excited to be heading back to Dryandra Woodland this weekend and hope to be lucky enough to spend some more time watching these amazing animals.
