Shot early May, hovering over the Hastings River mouth at sunrise looking back toward Town Beach.

Construction began in 1897 โ€” built to stop boats being destroyed crossing the bar. The rocks were quarried by horse-drawn tram from the site where the Birpai Local Aboriginal Land Council now stands and hauled out along a tram line into the river.
The painted rocks started as a Lions Club art competition in 1995 and never really stopped. Tributes, anniversaries, memorials, kids' handprints. Every rock has someone behind it.

It's easy to walk past it every day and stop seeing it

Last morning in Dorrigo. I was on the Skywalk before sunrise โ€” the 70-metre boardwalk that hangs over the escarpment above Bellinger Valley.
That double peak in the second shot is McGraths Hump. The Gumbaynggirr people, whose country this is, have a name for it โ€” they call it "old man sleeping." Once you know that, you can't unsee it.

The rainforest below is part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia โ€” World Heritage listed since 1986. One of the oldest rainforests on earth, sitting right in our backyard on the Mid North Coast.

This will be the last images from my trip up to dorrigo for a while, but I am hoping to get back there soon.

I was up at the Observaotry before sunrise on Thursday morning. The Norfolk pines, that orange line above the water, and this dome sitting quietly on the headland.

Albert York built the original observatory here in 1961 โ€” a retired builder who lobbied Rotary and council until it happened. His wife Bertha, around the same time, started turning the neglected land next door into a garden, funding most of it herself. It was named after her in 1968.

The dome you're looking at is the new one โ€” opened September 2024, almost four times the size of the original. Worth a visit on Wednesday, Friday or Sunday nights.

Harry Thompson lived in a caravan on Shelly Beach from 1959 until he died in 2000. He carved 254 steps into the headland by hand, built bush furniture, and looked after the place like it was his own โ€” because for him, it was. They called him the Mayor of Shelly Beach.

The carved archway and timber sculptures up at Harry's Lookout are a tribute to him, made by artists Stephen Killick and Stephen King.

I was up here before sunrise on Sunday morning. Didn't know any of that story until I got home.

The river's been running brown after all the rain lately, so I've been looking for other spots to shoot around Port Macquarie at sunrise.

Ended up walking through Mrs Yorks Garden on Wednesday morning โ€” and honestly I should have found this place sooner. Corten steel sculptures sitting in the long grass above the ocean, Norfolk pines silhouetted against the sunrise, and a quiet garden path that opens up to one of the best views in town.

Sometimes the rain sends you somewhere better.

More images from the Wonga Walk at Dorrigo National Park.
The first image is from behind Crystal Shower Falls โ€” standing in the rock cavity with the curtain of water in front of you, vines hanging down, the forest on the other side. Trying to keep the lens dry and just taking it all in at the same time.
The rest of the walk gave us a Land Mullet on the path, fungi glowing in the undergrowth where the light hit just right, and at one point the trees opened up enough to see all the way back down to the coast.

I've shot coastline almost every week for years. This was something else entirely.

One more frame from Saturday morning at Griffiths Lookout โ€” this one looking east just as the light caught the ocean on the horizon. On a clear morning you can see all the way to the coast from up there, and this was one of those mornings.

Then we drove down off the escarpment into the valley and found this creek near where we were staying in Thora. After an hour watching the light move over the ranges, standing next to running water in the quiet of the valley felt like a completely different world.
