Mums ! family photos matter to us. Not always to him.

I’ve had sessions recently where dad steps back, jokes that he doesn’t want to be there. But it’s not really a joke. I’m not at all offended but I can feel the mum’s discomfort. She really needs this. He just feels awkward. I get it.

In this session I felt his discomfort ( and was pre warned ) I also saw him honouring her and showing up for something that felt completely unnatural, because she needed it.

So I made a decision I’ve never made in 12 plus years of doing this.

I turned to Pete and said: “You can be on the sidelines. This is about Caity. I’m photographing her. You’ll be in a few but just know, this is about her.”

The relief was TANGIBLE.

A load lifted.

And everything changed. He relaxed .

It was about her. Truly. About honouring her becoming a mother. A First Mother’s Day gift.

Family photos can be about you, and him playing a supporting role. All good with me .

Not the highlight reel version, not the cleaned-up Sunday best. The real one.

The tired, tender, whole one. The one who is giving everything she has and somehow still showing up.

Because one day your children will want to know what you looked like in this season. How you held them. How you loved them.

You don’t need perfection . Your kids don’t need to behave and you don’t need to “be ready “

Just show up . Just as you are.

My own daughter is 8 years old, and we are very nearly at the stage where I’ll no longer be able to pick her up.

One day I’ll put her down and, without realising it, it will be for the last time. I know this because I’ve already felt it happen with my two teenage boys . It happened quietly, without ceremony. No milestone marked. It just… passed.

So Mumma, hold them close. Treasure the little things. Their weight on your hip. Sticky hands, tangled hair, arms still wrapped tight around your neck like you are everything.

When I photograph you, I’m not asking for anything more than this. just notice it. All of it. How wildly and wonderfully blessed you are that they are YOURS

No performance needed. You already have it all.

I photograph regular families — ordinary, everyday people.

Two questions come up every shoot:
what do I do with my hands?
where do we look?

My answer: hold someone, cuddle someone.

Even better — forget me and my camera for a moment. Be present. Look at your loves, your life, and be blown away by how wonderful it all is.

That’s what matters. Not where you look. Not what you do with your hands. Just being together.

I don’t photograph perfect families.

I photograph real families just like mine.

Sometimes it’s messy, sometimes their (or my) hair is unbrushed and our outfits aren’t quite “cohesive” and curated as I’d like.

Or in the best location, sometimes that’s my messy lounge or car.

But always unforced. Always as WE are.

And that’s what I want for the families I photograph: to finally be able to just be themselves and capture what really matters.

They’re not about outfits, locations, or perfect smiles.

They’re about being together.

No two family shoots are ever the same , no two newborns shoots are ever the same which is why after 12 years of having the absolute privilege of photographing families and their memories I can say it comes down to this: just being as you are , no permission needed.It’s YOUR memories, it’s YOUR story . That’s what makes families pick me ; the pressure is off , I don’t want perfection or performance . It’s an honour every time to document YOU.
