One of the most important skills in children's photography isn't knowing how to use a camera.

It's patience.

Children don't work to a schedule. They have big feelings, endless curiosity, and their own ideas about how a session should go. And that's okay.

The magic happens when we stop expecting children to perform and instead meet them where they are.

Whether they're shy, energetic, serious, silly, or need a little extra time to warm up, I follow their lead and work with their unique personality.

Some of the most beautiful photographs come from the in-between moments.

The giggles, cuddles, curious glances, and little expressions that can't be forced or rushed.

As photographers, we're not just capturing smiles. We're capturing who they are right now. And that takes patience, understanding, and a willingness to go with their flow.

Because childhood isn't meant to be posed perfectly. It's meant to be remembered authentically.

"Why do photographers use so many props?"

It's a question I hear often, and the answer is actually quite simple: props aren't the subject of the photo — your baby is.

The wraps, blankets, bowls, beds, bonnets, headbands, layers, textures, and tiny outfits all work together to create a finished image that feels intentional, timeless, and beautiful. They help tell a story, add colour and texture, and create a safe, comfortable environment for your baby during their session.

Every prop you see in a professional newborn studio has been carefully selected. Hours are spent sourcing pieces that photograph beautifully, coordinate well together, and complement a baby's delicate features rather than distract from them. Many are handmade by specialist artisans around the world, chosen specifically for newborn photography.

Props also help create variety within a gallery. A simple change of blanket, basket, colour palette, or outfit can transform the look and feel of an image while keeping your baby comfortable and settled.

But perhaps most importantly, props help preserve this fleeting stage of life. The tiny bed makes them look even smaller. The oversized blanket emphasises their delicate size. The soft textures and gentle colours keep the focus exactly where it belongs — on the tiny details you'll miss sooner than you think.

The props may fill the studio, but the photographs are always about your baby.
