Clear brief. Right people. Good preparation. And then, quite literally, I let the girls off the chain.

This session with the Jack + The Fox crew was a very good reminder that good brand photography doesn’t necessarily come from controlling every frame.

A lot of the work happens before anyone picks up a camera — knowing what the business needs, understanding the personality of the brand, choosing the right time to shoot, making sure everyone knows the plan and building enough trust that when things start happening, you can go with them.

And things definitely started happening here. 😂

Once we got going, I really didn’t want to tame the energy of this team. They’re funny, confident, a little bit cheeky and completely at home together, and the salon itself has personality in spades.

So rather than trying to make everything neat and “brand shoot appropriate”, we leaned right into it. That’s the bit I love. Because when the preparation is there and the working relationship is right, there’s room for spontaneity. And suddenly you’re not just making a collection of photographs of a business. You’re making something that actually feels like the business.

Which, surely, is the whole point.

I’ve been photographing weddings for more than 10 years now, so I feel reasonably qualified to have a Wednesday Wedding Wisdom moment.

Here’s mine. You do not need to spend your wedding day making photographs. You need to spend your wedding day getting married. The photographs should fit around that.

Of course I’ll find the good light. Of course I’ll make sure you have beautiful portraits. Of course I’ll step in when you need a bit of direction. But I’m not interested in turning your wedding into a production.

I want you to be at the party, talk to your people, eat the food you spent months choosing, drink the champagne, hear the speeches and actually remember the day. Because that is the point, really.

The photos should bring you back to it later — not be the reason you missed half of it in the first place.

That’s probably the clearest version of my wedding philosophy I can give you.

And if that sounds like your kind of wedding, I reckon we’ll get along.

Have loved going back through galleries and reliving these wedding day memories with these lovely people and I am so grateful that they have given me permission to share just a little glimpse into their celebrations with you x

Travel Diary Tuesday ll Greece, According to the Cats

I loved Greece for all the obvious reasons, but I also gave myself a very specific daily assignment: find a cat to photograph and send it to my daughter. Preferably several.

In Athens I found a little square where a group of cats seemed to live….and then I started to look and found plenty…reclining on ancient walls, walking the streets, living in and around monuments, parks, gardens. On Syros and Crete they just kept appearing — in streets, under tables, beside scooters, tucked into laneways, carrying on with their lives while the rest of us wandered around admiring Greece. After a while, looking for them became part of the rhythm of the trip.

Cats do not perform. Some were friendly, some wary, some completely indifferent, and every now and then one would look straight at me with that slightly unsettling stare that makes you feel like they know far more about you than is reasonable.

There was a harder side too. Some were healthy, some clearly weren’t, and seeing kittens and cats you knew might have a short life was hard for me. I had to keep reminding myself that I was a visitor, and not to judge everything through the lens of home. Still, I kept photographing them.

Partly because I love cats (don’t start…..I love dogs as well!), partly because it became a ritual, and partly because they were just so interesting to watch — happily existing alongside all the cities, villages, cafés and general human carry-on around them.

Six weeks in Greece means, naturally, I have quite a few more of these to share.

And yes, I sent far more than one cat photo a day. Obviously.

One thing I’ve noticed after photographing businesses for a long time is that people rarely run out of photos altogether.

They run out of the right one.

The one that fits the website banner. The one with some breathing room for text. The vertical version. The people shot that feels natural. The detail that suddenly becomes useful for a media request. The image that shows what the place actually feels like rather than just what it looks like.

That’s why I’m a big believer in building a proper image library rather than just turning up for a few hero shots.

A thoughtful library gives you options, and options are useful when you’re trying to keep a business visible without reinventing everything every week.

I’ve written a little more about how I think about that here.

A practical look at why businesses need a thoughtful image library for websites, social media, PR and marketing — not just a handful of hero images.

Community Cat Day, Thursday edition: two cars, 21 male cats and one very organised convoy to Holbrook Vet Centre for the snip. 🐈‍⬛✂️

All part of the work Dunroamin does to help owners care for their pets, reduce unwanted litters and slowly interrupt the breeding cycle.

Naturally, no cat convoy is complete without a little drama. One of the boys made a spirited attempt to defongerate just before departure, but was thankfully captured and contained with the help of a couple of very brave blokes. 😹

And the award for best name of the morning goes, without question, to Sprinkle Biscuits — aka Baby Cat. Absolutely no notes.

The boys head home again this afternoon, hopefully a little sleepier and considerably less reproductive.

What really struck me this morning is how much of Dunroamin’s work happens quietly in the background — volunteers giving their time, people donating money and resources, vets helping out and a whole network of humans just getting on with helping animals and their owners.

If you haven’t come across Dunroamin before, give them a follow. Donate if you can. Share their work if you can’t.

A lot of very good stuff happens without much fanfare. This is definitely some of it. ❤️

There is a point when I am photographing a place where I stop thinking quite so much about what it looks like and start thinking about what it might feel like to be there.

Where would I sit with a coffee? What happens here late in the afternoon? What would I notice when I walked through the door? Is this somewhere people come to slow down, eat very well, have a glass of wine, disappear for a weekend, gather around a table?

Of course the practical photographs matter. If you are booking accommodation you need to see the bedroom, and if you are choosing a restaurant you would quite reasonably like some idea of what the place looks like.

But the photographs that make us want to go somewhere usually give us something else as well.

They allow us to imagine ourselves there.

That is the part of accommodation, hospitality and tourism photography I find really interesting, particularly here in regional Australia where so many of the best places have very particular people, landscapes and communities behind them.

I’d happily spend much more of my working life telling those stories.

There is more of my photography for accommodation, hospitality and tourism businesses on the website (link in bio) if this is the sort of story you are trying to tell about your own place.

TRAVEL DIARY TUESDAY l “OH GOD, STOP HERE!!!!!”

The Flinders Ranges floored me. I’m not sure I have the words for why.

Driving through that landscape felt less like travelling through kilometres and more like travelling through time. The age of the earth is right there in front of you — in the folds of the ranges, the rock, the fossils, the dry creek beds, the endless roads disappearing into the distance. It makes our time here feel like a split second.

And somehow, that made being there feel even more miraculous.

Travelling with Ricky is one of my favourite things. Travelling with a photographer who keeps yelling, “OH GOD, STOP HERE!” from the passenger seat may not be one of his. 😂 But I couldn’t help it. Every few kilometres there was another view, another patch of light, another tiny thing in the scrub that made me want to stop and look properly.

Going back through these photographs takes me straight back there — the dry air, the huge sky, the impossible scale, the power and beauty of our natural world, the late afternoon light, the moon rising over the ranges, the sense of being very small in a very old place.

Maybe that’s why I photograph so much when I travel.

Not just to remember what somewhere looked like, but to find my way back to how it felt.

Apparently even photographers have the occasional “oh god, I hate the camera...do I really have to do this?” moments.

In the interests of showing my face around here a little more, I took this before we started a creative session at The Victoria Hotel on Saturday.

No fancy setup. No elaborate personal branding plan. Just me, my glasses, a silk scarf doing quite a lot of the heavy lifting, and a quick photo before I got back behind the camera where I’m much more comfortable.

Anyway, here I am having a go. 😆

And then I went to work.

I talk about creating an image library quite a bit, which possibly sounds more complicated than it really is.

Essentially, I’m trying to give a business enough good, varied photography that you are not staring at Instagram on Thursday morning thinking, Christ, we have used that photograph of the front door seventeen times.

A useful photography session isn’t only about producing three beautiful hero images. We might photograph the wider space, the people behind the business, what you make or serve, the little details customers notice, people actually using the space, some movement, a few portraits and all the in-between bits that give the business some personality.

The idea is that afterwards you have photographs that can work across your website, social media, newsletters, media, tourism listings, advertising and all those other places that suddenly ask you for six high-resolution images by 4pm.

It is something I have become more and more interested in because the businesses I love working with tend to have far more of a story than one polished photograph can ever tell.

If your own image library is beginning to feel a little tired, there is more about the way I work with businesses over on my website (link in bio)

Expectation: Epic smoke bomb photo with the wedding party...

Reality: “Is it lit?”

“Yeah, I think so...” Nothing.

“Hang on...”

💥

“Sh*t....” Cue everyone coughing, laughing, waving smoke out of their faces and trying to stay upright. A lot of pressure on my trusty wedding party assistant here lol!!!!!

Maybe we left it a little late in the afternoon.
Maybe we underestimated the breeze.
Maybe the smoke bomb had other ideas.

But did we get the perfectly posed Pinterest photo?

Nope.

Did we have an absolute ball trying? Hell yes. And honestly... I’d take the second option every single time.

Because years from now, they probably won’t remember whether the smoke drifted left or right. They’ll remember everyone doubled over laughing because the smoke bomb had a mind of its own.

Those are the photos that become favourites. The ones that remind you exactly why you chose these people to be in your wedding party and how your wedding felt.
