🐨 A tiny new arrival 🐨

It’s that beautiful time of year when we start meeting some of Kangaroo Island’s newest little arrivals. This tiny joey was still half tucked inside Mum’s pouch, with just that gorgeous little head peeking out to see the world. 💚

ROSENBERG’S GOANNA 🦎

This is a long watch—but it’s worth it! ❤️

Filmed in slow motion so you can really see the incredible detail of this beautiful Rosenberg’s goanna as it slowly came closer, flicking its tongue and tasting the air, trying to work out exactly what I was.

We were both curious about one another. I stayed quietly on the ground while it continued to investigate me, until one final flick of that extraordinary tongue almost touched my camera lens.

Then, apparently satisfied, it simply meandered away.

A truly wonderful wild encounter. ❤️

“Hello, human!” 👋🤎

Trav took me out for the day today, and what an awesome day it was — we were lucky enough to see four echidnas!

This gorgeous little character popped its head up through the fallen timber as if to say hello. I think I may have made a rather spiky little friend. 🥰

The Kangaroo Island echidna, Tachyglossus aculeatus multiaculeatus, is our island’s unique subspecies of short-beaked echidna. Tachyglossus means “rapid tongue”, while multiaculeatus refers to its “many spines” — very fitting for these beautifully spiky Kangaroo Island locals.

Definitely a good echidna day on Kangaroo Island. 🤎

A little bit of macro magic from Kangaroo Island. 🐝🌿

I’ve been having some fun getting up close with the tiny wildlife around home — including our beautiful Ligurian honey bees and this very cool little shield bug.

Kangaroo Island is home to one of the world’s oldest populations of pure Ligurian honey bees, protected by the island’s bee sanctuary — which makes photographing these little workers feel even more special.

It’s amazing what you start to notice when you slow down and look at the smaller world around you.

A cool drink on a hot summer’s day.

After returning from the beach, I found this Rosenberg’s goanna sheltering beneath my car.

While I was giving the dogs some water, he showed quite a bit of interest—so I told him he really shouldn’t be sitting under my car, put some water out for him and waited.

He came out, enjoyed a lovely cool drink, cooled himself down and then moved along.

Watch closely as he dips his snout into the water. Like other reptiles, goannas can close the glottis—the opening to their airway—while drinking. Such a fascinating animal to observe up close. 💚

So lovely to see the Rosenberg’s goannas out and about again! 🦎💚

As the weather begins to warm up, these beautiful reptiles are becoming more active and can often be seen soaking up the warmth of the sun.

⚠️ PLEASE TAKE CARE WHEN DRIVING ⚠️

Keep an eye out for goannas on our roads, particularly around roadkill, where they may be feeding. They can also spend time warming themselves on the road, so please slow down, keep watch and give them plenty of space.

If you do come across fresh roadkill and it is safe to stop, moving it well away from the road can also help prevent goannas and other scavengers from becoming road victims themselves. 💚

Always a treat to spend a little time with one of these incredible Kangaroo Island locals. 🦎
