Really privileged to be part of Dive Spear and Sport at 1770 Citizen Science team as they setup a new stewardship site at Llewellyn Reef on the Southern Great Barrier Reef

The lovely DSS crew will now be capturing data at Llewellyn Reef weekly, which will be used to monitor the health of our southern reef and be used for future initiatives and to ensure the Reef continues to thrive long into the future.

We had an amazing day out capturing photos that will now go into the database. Also managed a few happy snaps along the way, of course 🙂. Llewellyn is one of my favourites for the health of the coral and the variety - try and find this beautiful above the patch of healthy

Ghost ship

This incredible little wreck sits in between Bundaberg and Agnes Water, in 27m of water.

A recent dive out there had us in absolutely perfect conditions and visibility, allowing me to capture the ship in her entirety. Originally a gravel barge, she was being towed to an artificial dive site much further south when she broke off and sunk. So an unintentional dive here but positioned ideally for diving.

Been looking at the year in review... And realised that whilst I've had an absolute bucket load of adventures, have barely put up any of the pictures I took. Typical.

It's been a while between posts here... a lot going on.

However, things will settle down shortly and so here's a reminder of all the amazing ocean critters out there waiting - check out this day octopus (octopus cyanea) putting on a display in the Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort lagoon! I spent an entire weekend videoing and photographing my cephalopod friends (it's a thing for us fans of cephs) and it was absolutely magical.

Winter is the time where octopus are super active on the reef, as they're fighting and mating. Shortly after this, the males will die and the females will take care of their eggs, not eating until they hatch. As a result, the females will literally die for their babies...

This beautiful juvenile green turtle was not shy having a good meal of seagrass in front of me in the Lady Elliot Lagoon.

So incredible to have all these interactions with wildlife that is so comfortable in our presence.

Monday madness with the legendary Matty Smith.

Recently I was lucky enough to five Nelson Bay with Matty and Kellie. They generously showed me around.

The site we dived was an incredible muck dive - on here I do a lot of wide angle, but my first love is macro and muck. Not only do I love the diving style, I managed to find a bucket list species; the Blue Lined Octopus! I've been desperate to see one of these for years, and this little one was perfectly happy to pose and wasn't fussed by our presence at all. The mantle is about 5cm big. They're much smaller than you expect.

Very different to the Southern Blue Ringed Octopus found in Victoria.

I have missed cephalopods immensely as they're much harder to find where I'm based in QLD.
