Dove Lake is one of those places that already feels complete before the sky even begins.

There are just two spots remaining for the 2027 Star Chaser IV Tasmania tour, with bookings and details at davidmagro.com/starchaser4. This experience goes well beyond photography, seven days exploring some of the state’s most remarkable locations, eating locally, moving through iconic landscapes and being in the right place when moments like this happen.

On this night during the tour, the Milky Way arced across the sky while aurora built quietly along the horizon, reflecting back through the still water beneath Cradle Mountain. The colour deepened as the night unfolded, turning an already iconic scene into something far more rare.

Tasmania has a way of delivering nights you don’t plan for. When it all aligns, it becomes something you carry with you long after the trip ends.

Somersby Falls has a calmness that always draws me back. The water glides across the rock shelves in layers, creating a natural rhythm that pairs beautifully with long exposure. On this night the Milky Way rose above the treeline in a gentle curve, completing the composition in a way that felt both deliberate and effortless.

Waterfall scenes like this help beginners understand depth and light control in low contrast environments. The remaining 2026 Masterclass dates are at davidmagro.com/masterclass, with Queensland sessions in October marking the final workshops of the year and now starting to fill.

I have visited Somersby Falls many times across the years, and each season reveals something new. The balance between movement and stillness is always grounding.

Every year I see students arrive unsure of their abilities and leave with images that exceed their expectations. This collection shows a handful of photographs created during past Masterclass sessions by people who began with little confidence and finished the night with clear, balanced Milky Way images.

The transformation is always rapid because the process is simple when broken down step by step. If you would like to join a Masterclass, refine your work through the Editing Masterclass, or experience the Star Chaser tour, the full details are at davidmagro.com/masterclass. Current availability is limited across remaining 2026 dates, with select locations and sessions still open.

Seeing these results from first time photographers is one of the most rewarding parts of teaching. It shows how achievable the night sky can be with the right guidance.

The Central Coast holds some of the most accessible night sky locations in NSW. Cliffs, coves, boardwalks, lighthouses and beaches all sit within short driving distance of one another, allowing multiple compositions in a single evening. This collection brings together several of those landscapes captured under different conditions, from calm reflections to long sweeping arcs.

The Editing Masterclass builds on scenes like these, focusing on refining colour, contrast and detail into a consistent final image. Bookings and details are at davidmagro.com/editingmasterclass. The Central Coast has now sold out, with Brisbane and Canberra the remaining locations this year, and plans to return next season.

These scenes are a reminder of how much variety the coastline can offer within such a small area. Every headland, every cove and every lookout feels like a new opportunity.

Wineglass Bay on its own is already one of Tasmania’s most iconic locations, but every so often the sky decides to add something extra.

The Star Chaser IV Tasmania tour is built around experiences like this, with bookings and details at davidmagro.com/starchaser4. On the first night of the recent 2026 tour, we were lucky enough to witness aurora sweeping across the horizon beneath the Milky Way. The colour built slowly, then intensified into bands of green and red stretching across the bay.

Standing there with the group, watching it unfold in real time, was one of those rare moments that goes beyond photography. Even without the aurora, nights here feel expansive. When it does appear, it becomes something you don’t forget.

This collection brings together a series of images that trace the movement of the Milky Way across different months of the year. The position of the core, the tilt of the arc and the balance of light all shift over time, and seeing them side by side reveals how dynamic the night sky truly is. From the steep early morning rise to the wide winter arcs, each stage carries its own character.

The Editing Masterclass is now available in Brisbane and Canberra, with Melbourne and the Central Coast sold out. Bookings and details are at davidmagro.com/editingmasterclass. This is where images like these are refined into a consistent body of work, with a focus on colour balance, contrast and drawing out detail across different conditions.

Putting these images together always reinforces how much variety a single night sky can offer. It’s often in the editing process that those subtle shifts across the months are fully realised.

Maleny is one of the most rewarding landscapes to photograph under the Milky Way. The open views create a natural frame for the rising core, and the quiet of the countryside gives the whole scene a calm, unhurried feel. On this night the sky was exceptionally clear, revealing soft detail right through the galactic core.

The Editing Masterclass in Brisbane this July has four spots remaining, with bookings and details at davidmagro.com/editingmasterclass. This is where images like this are refined, through subtle colour balance, controlled contrast and drawing out detail without overworking the file.

Returning to locations like this is a reminder of how much is already there in the raw image. With the right approach to editing, the final result can feel just as considered as the moment itself.

The Masterclass Workshop sessions are where everything begins to click for most people. During the early hours of the evening, we walk through the camera setup step by step, demystifying the settings so that nothing feels overwhelming. Once the sky begins to rise, everyone can focus fully on composition, clarity and building their first real Milky Way image.

The remaining 2026 dates are at davidmagro.com/masterclass, with only a few spots left across Nowra and Norah Head Lighthouse in June, along with two final places in Canberra. Queensland sessions in October are also now open and starting to fill. The Star Chaser IV Tasmania 7 day tour is also open for bookings.

I find these nights especially rewarding because beginners often create their strongest images far earlier than they expected.

Some nights don’t feel real until you’re standing in them.

This was captured along the Tasmanian coastline, where still water turns everything into a mirror and the Milky Way rises with a clarity that’s hard to grasp until you see it yourself. The old boat shed sits quietly in the frame while the sky does the work, with colour along the horizon and reflections stretching back toward your feet.

The Star Chaser IV Tasmania tour is built around nights like this. Seven days across some of the state’s most photogenic locations, with the time and space to properly create. There are just two spots remaining for 2027, with bookings and details at davidmagro.com/starchaser4.

Tasmania has a way of slowing everything down at night. The wind drops, the water settles, and the sky feels closer than it should. Those are the moments that tend to stay with you.

Dangar Falls is one of the most atmospheric waterfalls to photograph at night. The mist rises gently from the base, catching the light in delicate layers while the Milky Way curves above the valley. On this particular night the air was cold enough that the water spray drifted only a few metres before settling, creating the perfect balance of clarity and mood.

The remaining 2026 Masterclass dates are at davidmagro.com/masterclass. Victoria has now sold out, and NSW is close behind with only a few spots left across Nowra and Norah Head Lighthouse in June, along with two final places in Canberra. QLD is still available in October.

I still remember the sound of the waterfall echoing across the gorge while the stars moved quietly overhead. Photographing places like this feels both grounding and expansive.
