Lest we forget. (From 2015)

The Reflections WWII vets project is nearing completion. 6000 registered so far.

Today we had a special and rare event. Muriel (95) and Bruce(93), our first veteran couple. Married 68yrs

I felt mean asking them to climb the stairs to the studio, but I did offer to carry Muriel. She declined as she didn't want to make Bruce jealous. He already refers to her as 'a cradle snatcher' being two years older than himself

Muriel was a radio operator using Morse code and transmitting in secret code of four letter blocks in New Guinea.

Bruce was a bomber pilot over the North Atlantic, between the UK and Iceland, where he managed to sink a German U-boat.

As we walked them out to the car, I reminded them how much they are appreciated for what they have done. Those words unerringly bring a smile to the vets faces that we have photographed.

If you know any WWII veterans that haven't registered yet, help them to register at https://aippveterans.com/veterans/

The Reflections Project:

Honoring our World War II Veterans project is one of the most ambitious photographic projects ever undertaken in Australia. Members of the Australian Institute of Professional Photography aim to commemorate our unsung heroes of World War II in print, and will gift the collection to the Australian War Memorial archives. The collection will provide a compelling pictorial record of returned servicemen and women living in Australia, reinforcing the ANZAC tradition, “We will remember them”.

An enthusiastic and curious bunch of photography students visiting the studio.

Meet beautiful Nora Kanair, 92.

A Lance Bombardier and artillery instrument calibrator in World War II.

' They don't aim straight on their own you know'. She told me.

I photographed Nora last week for the Australia wide Reflections Project. Volunteers are rounding up and photographing as many remaining WWII vets as we can before they are lost to us.

Nora won't be lost any time soon. I didn't have to slow down behind her, as she attacked the stairway leading to the studio like she was charging a breached fort wall. Determination in her rock solid hips and swinging arms.

When she got to the top she said. '

'I thought I'd better get in quick because I'm going on holiday next week.'

' Well it's lucky we got you in now. Stand over there'. I said catching my breath.

This is a portrait of a mother's anguish for a son during war.

Paul Royle was photographed as part of the Australia wide Reflections Project, Capturing WWII veterans while we can.

Paul was the 2nd last survivor of the famous 'Great Escape' where nearly 90 escaped. Most were re-captured and over 50 were executed in the Black Forest by the Gestapo, which Paul witnessed.

Aged 101, he passed away shortly after this shot was taken. Jo and I went to his funeral and met the family. A grand-son showed me letters from Paul's mother written through the Red Cross to him. He held it up for me to photograph.

The map in the background shows the various Stalags in Germany, including Stalag Luft 3 where Paul was interned.

Meet Donald Frearson - 91. Previously a sub-lieutenant on a destroyer doing convoy duties in the South-West Pacific during World War II

Professional photographers across the country, accredited by the Australian Institute of Professional Photography (AIPP), are donating their time and talent to create a compelling pictorial record of returned servicemen and women for the national archives.

“Would you like a cup of tea and a slice of my daughter’s fruit cake’, Donald said as he led us into his lounge.

He was charming and funny, as many of that generation can be. After the shoot, he asked us if we liked poetry.

‘Poetry is best listened to with your eyes closed’, he said.

We closed our eyes while Don recited ‘Clancy of the overflow’ beautifully and by heart.

What a treasure. To close your eyes and listen to this precious generation.
