What if I told you this was take 2 of this maternity session?

The first one didn’t quite go to plan, so we rescheduled… and somehow ended up with the most beautiful afternoon. 💛

These two are the kind of people who make my job easy. Down to earth, so easygoing, plenty of laughs and dogs in tow - it honestly just felt like hanging out with friends for an afternoon.

Exactly how I like my sessions to feel.

But there’s a little more to this story…

The photos you’ll actually want in twenty years aren’t the ones you think.

They’re not the perfect ones.
The ones where everyone is smiling, looking at the camera, radiating happiness.
Kids behaving 🤪
Newborn asleep.

I’ll openly admit I adore a beautiful portrait of my own family, without a silly face or a sibling squabble 🤣

But almost a decade into motherhood, I already know the photos I treasure the most are not the hero images or the sparkly moments.
They’re the subtle ones.

A glimpse into the life I was living

A photo that shows me how it felt.

And if I close my eyes, it’s like I’m right back there again.

These are the ones that will surprise you; the ones you’ll treasure most.

The real reason I do this, and it isn’t the pretty photos.

It’s not even really for you.

It’s for them.

Your babies. Your little loves. The ones who will one day ask:

“What was I like when I was little?”

You’ll have a hundred stories to tell them.

But you’ll also be able to show them.

How small they were.
How they loved riding on Dad’s shoulders or being thrown high in the air.
What you looked like together as a family.
The little quirks that made them, THEM.

Because one day, these won’t just be photographs of their childhood.

They’ll be part of the story you tell them about it.

A picture is worth a thousand words…

I think sometimes, it’s worth even more ✨

It’s no secret I love photographing families outdoors. And there are so many reasons why 🍃✨

The fresh air does everyone good.
Little loves have new things to explore.
There’s space to move, play and be yourselves.
And Mother Nature always brings the beauty and the constantly changing light and landscapes.

This sweet family chose an outdoor newborn session because it simply made more sense for them (hello 3 children! 🤪)

And honestly? Never underestimate choosing the easier option - especially during the newborn phase.

Stepping outside.
Feeling the sunshine on your face.
Letting the kids run free.
Breathing in some fresh air.

That can feel pretty priceless when you’re in the thick of those early days.

Your session, your way.

If you think you’ll feel awkward or uncomfortable in front of the camera…welcome to the club!

I hear this A LOT 😂

“I’m so awkward in photos.”

“I never know what to do with my hands.”

“I’m not photogenic.”

But…none of that matters.

Because you’re not booking a session where I just click, click, click and hope for the best.

A big part (and a favourite part!) of what I do is to gently guide and prompt you along the way.

A little movement.
A fun game.
Stroking your partner’s face.
Tickling tiny toes.
Telling a terrible dad joke.

Whatever gets you interacting, laughing and forgetting that there’s a camera there.
Whatever feels natural.

It’s my job to guide you and I won’t leave you hanging.

If you keep saying you’ll book photos “when things calm down”… this is for you.

They never do. 🙈

There’s always something…

Another loose tooth.
Nothing to wear.
Your little loves are absolute chaos.
The weather isn’t playing along.
Your daughter has cut her own fringe. 🫠

The list goes on.

Spoiler alert: it’s never going to calm down.

Motherhood is a season of ever-evolving highs and lows, the sweetest days and completely upside down chaotic ones.

And if you’re always waiting for the perfect moment to capture your family, you’ll miss so much of their childhood and your own journey through it.

Because the magic isn’t in everything being perfect.

It’s in the imperfect moments.

Their favourite outfit that makes you cringe.
The toothy smile.
The little personalities that feel like an emotional rollercoaster.

This is your life right now.

You don’t want to miss it ✨

The only moment that’s guaranteed is here and now.

The sun on your face.
Your little one’s hand in yours.
Those tiny arms wrapped tightly around your neck.

Stop saving things for a rainy day.

Use your favourite mug.
Wear the dress you’re saving for a special occasion.
Book the holiday.
Have dessert first.
Take the photos.

Because there will never be a perfect time. There is only THIS time.

And I promise, you’ll never regret having too many photographs of the life you loved living.

Is it just me, or does anyone else love looking back at the memories that pop up on your phone or socials?

When I see an “On This Day” memory or a reminder of an old holiday, I’m instantly transported back to that moment. Reliving the bliss of my two-year-old daughter in the snow, my sweet three-year-old boy (before the chaos really kicked in 😉), and a season of life that feels so far away now. Nostalgia instantly sets in.

The funny thing is, I remember those days feeling hard at the time. I felt completely consumed and stretched by motherhood, so much of it became a blur.

But I’m so grateful for the power of photographs. They take me back. They remind me of the little moments I’d forgotten. They let me feel it all over again.

It’s a reminder that we’re living in the ‘good old days’ right now… we just don’t realise it until they’ve become a memory.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. But imagine if we could recognise these days for what they are while we’re still living them 🤎

One thing can completely change the feel of your family session… and it’s probably not what you think.

It’s not the kids “behaving.”

It’s not perfectly coordinated outfits.

It’s not even sunshine (although I do love a golden sunset.)

It’s having your partner show up, fully present.

Playing, laughing, scooping little loves into the air, pulling you in for a kiss on the forehead, and doing all the things that make your family - your family.

That energy changes everything. It brings ease, connection, and so much happiness to every image.

Because my sessions aren’t about standing still and smiling at the camera. They’re about being together.
And you can feel it.

More often than not, I hear the same thing afterwards:

“That was actually really fun.”

“I’d do that again.”

“You make it so easy.”

Every single time, it makes me smile.
