SUPER-‘SLING’ CLUSTER!
This weekend I was invited out for a fungi hunt after all this rain we’ve been having in Aus. So .j.curry and I headed out to a local creek and had a really successful outing, seeing lots of cool fungi species, but this tight cluster of spiderlings really caught my eye. Reasonably rare to see, and always VERY tough to shoot anything in a web, let alone hundreds of baby brothers and sisters.

This entire ball was pretty small, not quite the size of a ping pong ball even, so these little baby nuggets are only a millimetre or two each.

This was shot just hovering in mid-air and honestly I didn’t think I would get a clean enough stack, but lo and behold, the very last one was on the money. As I moved after the shots, I knocked a nearby stick and disturbed the web, causing them all to scatter into a much larger, more spaced-out ball. Seeing all these spiders extended out through this tiny web looked amazing. It was such a weird and unique style of movement and was crazy to observe. Over the course of the following couple of minutes, they gradually came back together into their nice little ball. Loved seeing this and glad I could get a decent shot.

Epic Arctic Adventure!
This past December I travelled back to Europe for an extended holiday. After a manic year of work, I couldn’t wait to see some new sights, but could never have hoped to witness such a dramatic natural display as we did within the Arctic Circle of Norway and Sweden.

Aurora borealis or ‘The Northern Lights’ are on the bucket list for almost any photographer, and I’ve wanted to see them ever since I first started carrying a camera. Like wildlife, there are no guarantees with how or even if you’ll see this incredible phenomenon, but we were incredibly lucky on our trip to witness one of the best displays our guides had seen in well over a month.

Sitting around a fire under the stars, with green and pink lights dancing overhead, was an experience I’ll hold dear forever. I didn’t quite know what to expect, but the swirling streaming lights were unbelievably kinetic and vivid, at times stretching all the way from one horizon, straight over head to the other. It was a glorious, humbling and ethereal night, standing in awe beneath constantly shifting patterns.

These photos, like any, have been moderately enhanced, but thanks to the dark skies and strong activity, what we saw really wasn’t far from this at all

Over the past two years I’ve been shooting professionally almost nonstop, leaving little time to pursue wildlife and macro. Travelling again reminded me how much I enjoy photographing landscapes and the wider natural world. I really enjoyed shooting for myself again and although I’m unlikely to be posting macro with the same level of consistency, I want to have a place to share some of my other captures. Rather than creating a new account, this account will just become a little more diverse in its content. I’ll still find time for macro, but there is so much more beauty around than just the tiny things and I want the freedom to share other areas of my work.

So to anyone who has stuck around, thank you. I hope you continue to enjoy seeing some of this incredible Earth through my images.

Lastly, a huge shout out to my other half, Hannah, for making this holiday truly unforgettable. The memories we made will stay with me forever.

Very chuffed that BBC Earth reached out a few weeks ago asking to feature some of my images for Halloween.

Here are a few of my favourites over the years.

💀Sceletus! 💀
Peacock Jumping Spiders are known for their flamboyant abdomens, but some are a little more subtle. Meet Maratus sceletus, no explanation needed for the origin of this name.

All prepped for Halloween nice and early, these tiny jumping spiders can be a little more reluctant to dance than some of their cousins. I did see a couple of dances while the Peacock GOAT was shooting them (pretty sure he has a special whistle).

In truth, Flynn’s patience is quite incredible. He sat so long in one spot trying to capture a dance that he almost gave himself heatstroke in the blistering Aussie sun. Joker.

Here are some close ups of this lil cutie.

PuNk AF. Video ➡️
So today is apparently international jumping spider day, so here is Australias largest, the Green Jumping Spider. From this time last year and always great find. Bags of character on this dude and many compared him to a monkey the last time I posted.

Little video I haven’t shared before on the last slide

Swipe to ZOOM 🔍
Oosh. I’ve been on an epic journey going through images from the last three years, and there are so many shots that I either never edited, edited very poorly 😂, or completely forgot about.

I’ve been digging through the archives for some upcoming projects, and honestly, I’m feeling pretty inspired by the sheer number of shots I’ve taken over the years. So many subjects, so many memories, and so much adaptation and progression in techniques, both in-camera, compositionally, and in post.

It’s been a really fulfilling process going through this journey, and I’d encourage you to dive into your own archives, you might just surprise yourself. This one’s from Feb 24, not too long ago.

Hope you like this epically posed weevil. What a boss!

And of course, happy !

Sleeping Bee 🐝💤
One of my favourite finds from our night shoots with the WA boys. Shooting peacocks is always great, but the cool evenings and relaxed, sleeping subjects are something special to encounter and observe.

Many species of bee sleep like this, though it’s not a common sight. I’ve only come across it a few times, and I’d love to capture more of these moments.

Never have I ever….
…shot a red damselfly before. Damselflies are up there with some of the hardest subjects. Tiny, flighty, and almost always perching on something springy to the touch. Your best chance to get a good look is either super early in the morning or late at night when they’re resting, holding onto grass often by the side of water.

Even in this sleepy state, it’s still very hard to manipulate them in a way that allows you to get a shot off. I’ve photographed a few damsels before with varying degrees of success, but this lusciously vibrant red one had me fixated.

It took a little while, but I finally got there with an alright image. It was hard to get a good, level angle because of how it was perched, but I’m glad to walk away with a nice close-up of that alien face

Added a perspective shot at the end, albeit a different flavour, but it’s the same size which helps to see its daintiness.

RUFOUS!
Recently I went on a trip to far North Queensland and although I did some macro/bugging, some of the other wildlife I encountered really stole my attention and appreciation. Countless marsupials in all their glorious forms including this incredibly cute little rascal - The Bettong!

These guys look like an oversized cute ratty rabbit/ gerbil thing, but of course, like every other animal in Australia (not an actual fact) this is a marsupial. I met many new species on the trip, but this little guy I’ll never forget.

He just rustled up to us whilst all 5 of us were chilling by the campfire. He had no bother about us at all, crawling about right around us. He ended up stealing a small scrap of sweet potato we had cooked and munching that. (Photo 2)

I didn’t even need a long lens and used my 24-70 before switching over to a 35mm Samsung 1.4 art lens 😂. I was that close. Still he just chilled.

It was an awesome widlife experience and I’ll always remember it with great memories.
