As the sun rises above the calm waters of Tin Can Bay, fingers of mist cling to the surface and then gradually make their way skywards. An impactful combination of colour and movement on a gorgeous spring morning. We're on a boat welcoming in the new day - nothing more spectacular or comforting.

Don't think I had ever appreciated just how fascinating mud can be until I visited and had a really good look at the bubbling mud of Wai-o-Tapu near Rotorua in New Zealand. In that split second right before a mud bubble erupts, there is unexpected perfection and surprising colour in the site. It can really get you in!

Just look at the intense colour of the breeding season beak of the Atlantic puffin! Each spring adult puffins grow this bright orange and multicoloured outer beak to attract a mate, the colour dropping away in winter to return their beak to a dull grey. Such an amazing evolution, and it sure makes for fascinating photography, especially when the colour contrasts so startlingly against grey conditions, or in surroundings that lend themselves to a bit of bokeh. Our time in Mykines, Faroe Islands, made all of that possible.

Coming back to Sea Lion Island after a tough day or two fishing, these gentoo penguins catch a wave to reach shore and then rest a while on the beach, gathering strength to get back to their families in the rookery. Such a gorgeous backdrop to celebrate their safe return!

Couldn't resist sharing a short collection of images depicting the cheeky innovative, precious behaviours of a couple of young orangutans at Camp Leaky in Central Kalimantan, Indonesian Borneo. Chomping on and playing with random leaves, ripping open husks, licking pipes for water, repurposing rubbish to protect them from the rain.... They are the most entertaining and endearing of creatures.
