5 Things That Changed My Shoots Completely
1. Hiring a team instead of doing everything myself
I used to be photographer + creative director + stylist + assistant + BTS. Bringing in a stylist, HMUA and BTS support allowed me to stay in my zone of genius: directing, shooting and connecting with the subject. I don’t do this for every shoot - mainly my editorial fashion shoot days - but having a team for the bigger productions has completely changed the final result.
2. Planning everything in Milanote
Mood board, lighting references, posing direction, colour palette, location notes - everything lives in one space. Clients can collaborate inside it too, which means we’re aligned before we’re even on set. Zero confusion on shoot day. Remember communication with your clients is super important and Milanote is perfect for that!
3. Letting styling lead the story
The outfits set tone, shape, movement, and emotional direction. When styling is intentional, the whole shoot feels cohesive and elevated. I now build the narrative around wardrobe instead of making it an afterthought.
4. Prioritising BTS + assistants
Having someone capturing BTS means I don’t have to think about content while I’m shooting. Assistants handle lights, reflectors, gear adjustments, and set transitions. It keeps the energy flowing and the images stronger. Also they are in charge of feeding and keeping you hydrated which is incredibly important!
5. Using flash intentionally
Flash has become my favourite tool. Using it thoughtfully gives images depth and that high-end editorial polish. It’s been a small shift with a big impact.
If you’re a photographer:
Let go of doing everything alone. Your best work comes when you have the space to create, not juggle.
📌 If this helped you, save this for your next shoot and share it with another photographer who needs to stop doing everything solo.
