Koala Adventures Australia

Koala Adventures Australia I'm an avid hiker and photographer from the Sydney region, going on numerous adventures around the p Over the years I had grown to enjoy it casually.

An avid bushwalker and photographer based in the sydney region, going on numerous adventures around the place. I started bushwalking when I was a kid, with my two neighbors, going on small adventures in the bush next to my house, having fun, mucking about, etc. My adventures beyond my front door truly began in 2019, where I wanted to impress a girl I was into. I got my mates together and we went o

ff to the tahmoor canyon and stayed the night after some traveling through boulder fields and up cliffs. Today I go to all sorts of places, from mountains, to canyons, the beach to the outback, and it's been a wild ride with floods, lightning storms, landslides and whirlpools. Hiking 100s of kilometers and spending many days in the bush, this is my story, and I hope you enjoy

What do you think of the lighting?
It was a damn hot day when I took this photo, bright too, and I was seeking shade away from the rocks and glare of the ocean, when I stumbled upon these young Spanish bayonets.
Yucca aloifolia, known as Spanish bayonet or dagger plant, is a beautiful little tree that can grow up to 3 meters high, and loves sandy soils.
Native to southeastern USA, and parts of Mexico, it is pretty tolerant of drought and heat, which is perfect for Australian gardens. It was grown in this area to bring more plant life in the old Bombo quarry.

Have you been Rock climbing?
The Bombo headland geological site is home to some amazing rock formations including this one here.
The basalt columns just off the Prince's Highway are left from ocean erosion and blue metal quarrying in this area, and it is host to a variety of plants.
Unfortunately, it can also be a rather busy area, and I was forced to go off track to take this photo in the only place there wasn't a large amount of tourists. The light you see around the tops of the rock is just what remains of fixing the overexposed lighting.

What things have you found in rockpools? I was doing a bit of walking around a rock pool and decided to try and photograph some of its inhabitants, like this little zebra top snail.
Austrocochlea porcata, or zebra top snail, is a snail commonly found all around the coast of Australia, in places such as rockpools and other ocean environments.
They are typically about a centimeter or two in size and their color and stripes are extremely variable.

Do you like the beach?
Commonly found on beaches as a w**d, the largeleaf pennywort (Hydrocotyle bonariensis) is quite often seen amongst the waterways of NSW.
An invasive species, it is known for invading coastal environments like sand dunes where it competes with local species, however there are many native pennywort species that are mistaken for the largeleaf pennywort and vice versa.

Can you spot the spider? Here is a pseudanthus pimeleoides, with a little green spider.
Pseudanthus pimeleoides is a small shrub up to 60 centimeters high with crowded leaves about a centimeter long. Endemic to the Sydney region between the Colo River and just south of Bargo, it's not a particularly common flower.
It typically grows in sandy soil, especially in moist gullies, such as where it was found in the tahmoor canyon.

Do you like spiders? I love spiders like this jewel spider (Austracantha minax), which is a type of orb weaving spider.
Preying on small flying insects, these adorable little arachnids don't have that bad of a bite, they rarely bite unless you intentionally pick them up, and are nonfatal to humans.
Living in wooded areas that have lots of shrubs, these cute critters can grow up to a centimeter in size, not including its legs, and are well known for their spines on their backs.
One thing that makes them so infamous with bushwalkers is the fact they are directly responsible for the webs that we oftentimes stumble into.

Have you seen this tree before? It's almost certainly found somewhere in your local parks
Chinese thuja (Platycladus orientalis), also known as Oriental arborvitae is a species of coniferous tree from the Cyprus family. Endemic to the northeastern parts of East Asia, notably China, this tree is actually considered near threatened in the wild.
A slow growing tree, Chinese thuja on average can grow up to 20 meters in height, though in some cases as high as 30 meters, with a diameter of roughly 3 to 5 meters.
It's distinct flat leaf formations and seeds are just some of the reasons it can be found so commonly in gardens, with its slow growth making it an easily managed and spectacular addition to your front yard

What's your favorite time of day for walking? I think golden hour is one of the best times. Here is some kidney w**d (Dichondra repens) from one of my golden hour photography sessions
Kidney w**d, despite the name, isn't actually a w**d in Australia and New Zealand, it's one of our natives and found in forests, woodland, shrubland and grasslands. It can also be found in lawns, where it gets its name as a w**d, because it often competes with the foreign grass.
Found in all mainland states, preferring clay based soils, especially in flatter areas with some shade, if you look around next time you walk you'll be sure to find some!

Known more commonly as pink sorrel or broadleaf woodsorrel, this flowering plant from Central and South America is commonly found worldwide in gardens and agricultural areas, infesting various types of crops and garden plants.
In the southeastern regions of Australia, namely NSW, SA and VIC, this plant is common amongst gardens where it is typically introduced by runoff, ants, or larger unsuspecting animals. It's best dealt with by removing the roots and mulching over.

King protea (Protea cynaroides), known also as honeypot, giant protea or king sugar bush.
Native to the southern sections of South Africa, particularly around the Fynbos region, this specimen is actually quite interesting for its resistance to wildfires.
A thick underground stem with dormant buds and other components allows the plant to be scorched on the surface whilst still being capable of survival.
