Today is ANZAC Day in Australia.

It is a time to remember and commemorate all Australians and New Zealanders who fought and died in wars and peace keeping actions.

However, I am also a firm believer that we need to question the wars that our politicians take us into. Our country has fought in many wars that was founded on questionable moral and legal grounds.

The Gadhimai Festival in Nepal 2014. A thousand men are hired to kill the buffaloes in the stadium as animal sacrifices. Prior to the killings, the men drink heavily before meeting at the temple where the religious ceremonies begin before dawn.

As long as poverty, injustice and gross inequality exist in our world, none of us can truly rest.” Nelson Mandela.

Back packing and travelling through this world, the poverty that I see is beyond heart breaking. The despair and the daily struggles, child labour that denies the children hope or an education, the caste system and religion that perpetuates poverty, these moments fill most travellers with despair.

Buying from local stall holders and eating street food and putting money back into the local economy does help in a small way.
