… I seem to have a special connection with Grevillea caleyi. In 2018, when I came back to Sydney from Shanghai for a short stay, I went for a walk in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park. In the middle of the bush, a bright red flower suddenly caught my eye—it looked just like a toothbrush. I stopped to take a few photos, then hurried on to catch up with the others. At the time, I thought I would surely see more ahead, but I never did. It wasn’t until the COVID years, when I was stuck in Sydney, that I truly learned what that flower was. I began volunteering in bush care at Mermaid Pools near Manly Dam, working with an ecologist to survey rare plants in the area. That’s when I discovered that the flower I had photographed years earlier belonged to a critically endangered species. That discovery sparked a deep interest. After that, it felt as if an eye in my mind had opened—I started noticing Grevillea caleyi everywhere. Of course, it helps that I live on the Northern Beaches, which happens to be within its very limited natural range. In 2021, I wrote about Grevillea caleyi in my book Stories of Australian Flowers and Birds (Vol. 1), using the very photos I had taken back in 2018. Then in 2024, during the second and final year of my Master of Environmental Science at the University of Sydney, I participated in a conservation project supported by the National Parks. The project focused on monitoring wallaby browsing on endangered plants in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, to assess whether wallabies pose a threat to their survival. And, as it turned out—by coincidence or perhaps not—Grevillea caleyi was one of the two species I was assigned to observe… NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service Gardening Australia
The critically endangered Grevillea caleyi grows only in national parks and a few suburbs north of Sydn...
