What can change its color, texture, and even its whole vibe in seconds? 🤯🦑

Meet the cuttlefish — easily one of the ocean’s coolest (and most underrated) shapeshifters. 🎨 This wild little cephalopod can switch up its colors, patterns, and even the shape of its body to communicate with others.

From flowing rainbow displays to rough, sand-like skin, it’s all powered by millions of tiny pigment cells called chromatophores, working alongside muscles in the skin to transform faster than anything else out there — yeah, even faster than a chameleon.

Part science experiment, part natural artwork… and probably your next favorite ocean creature.

Double trouble!!

Two male giant cuttlefish bump into each other and it immediately turns into a silent flex-off.
Colors start flashing, patterns changing, both trying to look bigger and better without actually touching.

Cannot wait to get back into the cold waters of Sydney to swim with my favourite animals!

Finally had the chance to photograph one of my bucket list sharks - the oceanic whitetip (Carcharhinus Longimanus)

An absolute dream come true. To share the water with one of the ocean’s most iconic predators, in the middle of the Indian Ocean. These beautiful animals have a bad reputation for being aggressive and dangerous. In reality, when we jumped in the water with them, all we saw were bold and curious animals.

Unfortunately, they are currently classified as Critically Endangered under threat from bycatch and shark finning.

Hard not to be mesmerised by giant cuttlefish with interactions like this!

This cuttlefish saw a nearby rival (cuttlefish not me) and started flashing the most incredible display. They can change colour using special skin cells called chromatophores. These cells contain pigments (like tiny coloured sacs) that can expand or contract.
When the pigment sacs expand, the colour becomes visible.
When they shrink, the colour fades or disappears. How insane is that 🤯
