I remember when Ben had contacted me asking me to be the Western Sydney photographer for the 24hour night commission I was so taken aback. Not because I didn’t believe in myself but because this was a huge deal. I was fearful I wouldn’t do western Sydney justice. To represent a whole body of people, my community is a huge responsibility I didn’t and dont take lightly. I remember talking to Ben about my fears & concerns. There was a story he told me that really stuck with me. He spoke to me about photographer, Eugene Atget. Atget made it his life’s mission to document ALL of old Paris before it was gentrified. Maybe a task almost impossible to ever reach in one lifetime.
I think we put so much pressure on ourselves to be and do everything. Surrendering and allowing this journey to take me allowed me produce a body of work I’m incredibly proud of. That tells a story about who and how special we are. To be the eyes for what takes place in spaces that have poured into me is a huge honour and I’m so grateful to celebrate this huge achievement that is not only for myself but for my community.
Thank you to my friends and family for supporting me through this and all of the incredible people and collectives I’ve met who have been a big part of putting this project together. Special thanks to Clare and Yiorgo for your belief in me and guidance. And congratulations to the three photographers I went on this journey with. You are all incredible ❤️
