THE WARATEA WRECK
Tech 1 dive, Victoria’s ship graveyard

For years, I’d heard whispers of the fantastic wreck diving off Port Phillip Bay, a site renowned among the Melbourne technical diving community. This watery graveyard harbors over 45 wrecks—remnants of tugs, dredges, barges, lighters, coastal freighters, a World War I submarine, a paddle steamer, and a patrol boat.

When I finally dived there, I expected chilling temperatures, murky visibility, and only the faintest traces of light trying to pierce the wreck. Instead, I was greeted by a water temperature reminiscent of an early spring dive in Sydney and 20 metres of crystal-clear visibility.

The Waratea wreck was alive with marine life and colour. And Rus and I even had a cheeky seal darting playfully past us during our deco.
This was my introduction to what I’ve realised is the most diverse Tech 1 diving area in Australia.

A photography dream came true this week when I found out my image of Ryan Booker, Christina Lapid, and Nate Stephens diving inside the ex-HMAS Brisbane wreck was selected as the cover shot for the latest issue of Scuba Diver Magazine Australia & New Zealand edition.

There’s also a couple of my other photos of the wreck inside the mag, but even more thrilling is that the issue is jam-packed with many of my favourite Oz & Kiwi underwater photographers and friends.

Also contributing photos to the fantastic 10-page article on the ex-HMAS wrecks sprinkled around the Australian coasts are Keren Green, Chelsea Haebich and Nicolas Remy.

The issue also contains Don Silcock’s article and beautiful photos of the Tubbataha reef in the Philippines, and PT Hirschfield’s (Pink Tank Scuba) new “Diving with…” column featuring Jules Casey‘s journey into underwater photography.

Finally, Pete Mesley’s article and gorgeous photos of the Mikhail Lermontov wreck in New Zealand round out friends also in the magazine. Pete was very generous with his wreck diving photography tips when we were in Truk Lagoon together in 2019, and I’m thrilled to appear in the same magazine.

If you love wreck diving as much as me, this issue is a fantastic overview of wrecks Downunder! Adrian Stacey’s done an incredible job putting it all together. It’s definitely a keeper

O N E T R E E S I N K H O L E (WURWURLOOLOO)

My buddies Brock Hayden, Jo MacGregor and Weng Tang gearing up for a 45 metre tech dive in One Tree Sinkhole outside earlier this year.

The sinkhole lies on private farmland, and there's something really special about visiting the elderly owners to collect the gate keys. Signing the paper visitors' book on the rustic old farmhouse verandah, and spying the names of some of the most famous divers in the world amongst the pages is something I'll always remember.

So what's down there at the bottom of the sinkhole?

15 metre visibility, an old wooden harvester, an upside down vintage car, a few yabbies, and a beautiful limestone swim-though which made me gasp and think, "So THIS is what this cave diving is all about".

It's been really fun to switch back to more and more land-based photography over the last 12 months.
