[ • about the pic • ] It’s always been a small dream of mine to create something in the Snowy Mountains. There’s something about the combination of the snow gums, the alpine air subtly shifting the colours of the landscape, and the abundance of wildlife that makes it such a remarkable place to experience—let alone photograph.

Two weeks ago, I had the opportunity to spend some time exploring and photographing parts of this landscape and the wildlife that calls it home. Thankfully, the weather was kind enough to let me wander through much of Kosciuszko National Park without too many layers. The trade-off, however, was that the warmer conditions meant the snow coverage wasn’t at its best.

Here are a few moments from the trip.

3. Snow gums glowing in the afternoon light as the moon begins to rise.

[ • about the pic • ] Becoming a sailor, has given me special access to different kinds of birds that I used to dream of photographing before. Pelagic birds are in a league of their own. They travel the seas as the continents as they wish and are notoriously some of the animal kingdom’s furthest migrating species. Also, incredibly beautiful to encounter.

Albatrosses are truly special to me. Their eyes are incredibly soulful and show you deep knowledge as their aerial skills demonstrate what a life at sea has taught them. Most incredibly, juveniles can spend up to 5-6 years at sea without ever touching solid ground. In this time, they might face high winds, storms, rainy weather, and unpredictable waves. Can you imagine what it would be like if you were an albatross?

Here’s a shot of a black-browed Albatross I encountered on a recent sail on the east coast. Sitting peacefully amongst the stormy winds, an albatross rests as gale force winds swoop around it. The water shakes as the breeze blows violently and rapidly creates ripples across every wave’s crest. Unshaken, the albatross swims steadily as each wave passes while confidently staring into the big open sea.

[ • about the pic • ] You’ve seen me say before that grey nurse sharks are one of my top five favourite sharks. And yeah, that comment still holds. They’re incredible—full of personality and packed with unique characteristics that set them apart.

I got the chance to dive alongside a few of these late last year, and I decided to hit pause on the boat repairs once more for the opportunity to encounter these underwater residents of the NSW coast. To my happiness, I managed to spend uninterrupted time with them, with my camera in hand and a full tank of nitrox on my back.

What stuns me every time, and what always leaves me in awe, is how observant they are and how skilful they are as swimmers. These sharks zoom in and out in a matter of seconds as they powerfully swish their tails. Above all, they are skilled hunters, doing everything they can to conserve energy as they move with gentle, effortless motions among the rocky reefs.

Here’s my favourite shot from that day—swept in with the rising tide, an adult grey nurse shark swims slowly as it observes its surroundings. Steadily, it lets the water push it forward, barely moving as it glides with ease. Dominating the coast with its size, speed, and hunting skills, the shark moves confidently and with precision.
